XPS 8950, internal Blu-ray drive

There are no approved Blu-ray drives on the XPS 8950 parts page which is why the sales page does not offer any. It only shows four DVD+/-RW drives =

Thank you very much. These boards are great. I am quite skilled in woodworking and auto mechanics but do not have a lot of knowledge about computers. Without people like yourself that share your knowledge, I do not know how I would manage when it comes to computers.

8950 uses quite elaborate odd mounting hardware (bracket and cage etc.).   XPS 8950 Service Manual (dell.com) it is easier if you already have a stock dvd in 8950 and then you can just swap the bare dvd for bare BR while using all stock oldd mounting hardware.  the catch here is Dell does not sell a BR bezel for 8950 so you may have to use dvd bezel to fit on the bare BR and hope it is standard fitting.

here are pictures of the dvd 9M9FK validated in 8950 (with additional bezel which is not part of the DP/N).  before you order the Dell BR odd make sure the form factor matches the picture.

Thank you For the response. My XPS 8950 should be equipped with a DVD drive, so hopefully it should be easy to swap out and the front bezel fits.. If not, I am a pretty skilled fabricator. Do you think I will need different software than what comes with the XPS 8950 to make it run correctly or should the Cyber Powerlink DVD software be sufficient?

I prefer let Windows 11 download blue ray driver automatically for you.  I have an old Dell XPS desktop that has Dell BR and Windows 10 automatically knows it is a BR ROM on explorer.  I do not have BR disc to test it though.

not familiar with Cyber Powerlink DVD.  do you plan to use the BR to watch video or burn disc?  for just watch video the Windows default software maybe adequate.

As long as you got a DVD Drive a BU40N will work.  You remove the mounting bracket from the back of the drive and put it on the BU40N.  When you order without ANY optical drive there is a problem with the front bezel having no hole and the inability to get the ODD mounting bracket and screw.

Once installed the Software shoud recognize it. If it doesnt then you do a C:\windows\system32\systemreset -cleanpc   fresh start from Admin Command prompt.

Then you install the DELL Cyberlink Suite Software from the microsoft store.

FK29V shows as "not available for sale" by Dell spare parts. You will need to search the web for the part number and reseller.
