XPS 8500, cannot access bios setting

Hi all,

First of all ... good day everyone.

First day to join the community since I bought the XPS8500 on 2012.

Folks, I need your expertise on my XPS8500 problem.

Last Monday of this week, I tried to update the latest Microsoft KB for window 10 pro then the next day I got black screen when power on my PC. I tried to access the BIOS (as press F2 prior the desktop power up), and verify all component (RAM, Devices, Boot sequence, ...), then exit without saving since nothing change on the BIOS and let PC restart ... everything went fine.

On the last Wednesday, it happened again ... cannot boot up my PC, I cannot access to BIOS setup screen even press F2 key. I tried as the suggestion for BIOS recovery (unplug everything and leave only mouse-keyboard-monitor and change the new motherboard's battery), then be able to access "window access advance startup" ... then able to restore point of the last working status ... then everything went fine and I did a backup system image.

Last night, PC failed to boot again ... and even though I cannot access to BIOS any more by pressing F2 key (as unplug everything or reset the jumper for Bios as I did on Wednesday) ... meaning the Bios screen turn to white screen after 1 second, and I cannot access to the "window access advance startup" in order to restore system image. :Crying:

BTW, there is nothing upgrade on my XPS8500 and it still use the BIOS A12. Is there a way to flash the Bios with latest version A14 ?

Sorry for the lengthy message and thanks advance for any suggestion.

Cheers

If it's not booting now, you do not even want to think about updating BIOS, which could turn the motherboard into a useless brick.

Can you test this monitor and cable on a different PC or a different monitor and cable on this PC?

Do you use an add-in AMD or NVidia video card or only onboard Intel Graphics? If you use an add-in video card, physically remove the card and connect a working monitor to one of the onboard video ports, HDMI or VGA.

If you have a bootable USB stick, connect it to the PC before powering on. Then power on and immediately press F12. Assuming you can see the menu, look for the option to boot from USB and see what happens.

the monitor is working fine on my laptop, I also borrow my friend PC in order to test some component on both PC (test my components on his PC and his on my PC ... exclude the mobo). I bought the XPS 8500 since 2012 (12GB DDR3 RAM, Radeon 7770 2GB, HDD 2TB) and no internal upgrade since then (just bought external drive 4TB for backup 6 months ago). I'll give another try tonight with the USB bootable if it's able to read since the "boot menu" (F12) popup so quick that I cannot even chose the device, and let you know. Thanks :)

What color is power button on front of PC and is it steady or blinking when PC doesn't boot?

Is the power supply LED on rear of PC, above power cord socket, on (green) even when PC won't boot?

Better just to pull the add-in video card out and try using onboard Intel Graphics. If you swap in parts from some other PC, you probably need to clear BIOS every time to make sure the motherboard recognizes the "new" hardware.  To clear BIOS remove the motherboard battery and press/hold power button for ~30 sec after installing "new" hardware, and then reinstall the battery. And there's no guarantee components from some other PC are even compatible with your XPS 8500, especially things like RAM.

When you replaced the motherboard battery, did you seat it correctly/fully in the socket, and right-side-up? And are you sure the new battery is good? Did you clear BIOS (see above) before you installed the new battery?

Have you reseated all the RAM modules in their slots?

Hi RoHe,

Thanks for the quick reply :)

Just come back from work and give it a try one more time (without using USB boot for recovery) ... press the power button ... blue screen coming up

... and .... and ... and .... it allows access the window diagnostic

... OMG ... I just restored the last backup prior to the window update KB4493509 for April.

... restart PC .... keep my finger cross and praying ....

When it's up and working, I'm able to updated the latest Bios "A14" for my XPS8500, then do another backup again.

... then restart again .... keep my finger cross and praying .... and it's working again after restart.

Still praying that my PC will be work again for tomorrow without issue ...

I'll update this post again tomorrow whether my PC working or not.

Thanks again :))

Note: to answer your question
The button light is always white when it's power, amber light on mobo and green light on back of PSU.
My friend PC is also a XPS 8500 and has the same config as my PC. We got a good deal when bought together.
All the components have been seated correctly .. otherwise will be get a beep sound.
The battery just bought a week ago (package of 2 ... one used for the scale device).

Its not POSTING.  Removing the data cable from hard drive will allow getting into F2.

Its crashing to white screen.  If not there is basic bad hardware like ram and or video card.

Glad you got it running again.

Might have been a bad installation of that latest MS update.

April 14th, 2019 12:00

Hi Speedstep ... thanks for advice ... but all components are origin from the box when I bought since 2012, and it was working fine before the first update of MS for April (KB4493509). I just want to access to Bios boot to make sure it got the right boot drive since I cannot access to boot menu (F12) ... if flash so quick that I cannot select the drive to boot.

Hi Rohe,

Away from home yesterday and just got back ... rush to the pc and press power on .... get black screen :Crying:

Totally confuse !!! ... it's so weird ... cannot believe it ...

I did restart the PC 4th time on the last Friday after restored the last back up (prior the MS update) and got the latest Bios (A14) ... everything ran smoothly on Friday ... no issue at all ... and now it's totally up side down.

I cannot even access to Bios (F2) or access to boot mode (F12) from the first power on ... then unplug all components ... except monitor, keyboard & mouse ... try to access to BIOS ... get nothing (no beep sound and got dark screen) on first try ... what on earth is it ... mobo got drunk after BIOS update :**bleep**: ...

Unplug RAM & battery and re-seat them again ... try second time ... it allow to access BIOS ... check boot drive and save then exit (pretend to change the setting since I've only one HDD) ... and it's working. :Embarrassed:

I'm tire with that ... restore the backup and work only one day ... and have to restore backup again to get the PC work :Huh?:... is it COD :Huh?:  ... it's NOT a Call Of Duty ... but it's a Cycle Of Death :Lightning:

Don't know what to do ... thinking ... buy a new one (or build a new one  )  instead of wrestling with it ... do you have any suggestion

Thanks :)

PS: Still love the box ... it's still clean from outside & inside.

And you're sure the battery is fresh, even if it's "new out of the package"?

I gather it's working again, so it's possible reseating the battery and RAM solved the problem. Keep using it and see if everything is ok, but back up regularly, to be safe.

BTW: If you're using a power strip or surge protector and problem recurs, try removing those and see if that helps...

And one more thing...Reboot and immediately press F12. Look for option to run diagnostics (may say "boot to utility partition") and run all of them including RAM and extended hard drive tests. Copy error message(s), if any...

April 14th, 2019 17:00

Hi,

I did check the new battery before replace the old one.

I did try connect the power directly to the outlet (without the surge).

Try to access F12 ( in rder to select boot mode) when powerup but got nothing show up ... that's why I use F2 instead of F12.

Still don't know the reason why it doesn't power up correctly :TongueTied:

I'll try as your suggest when I done with the backup again and let you know.

Thanks

When you power on, don't wait until the display is visible. Power on and immediately tap F12 ~2-3 times.

BTW, there was an issue prior to this problem that the my PC is always restart when I shutdown the PC when I done my work.

So I search for the solution and there is someone in Microsoft Community suggest that if it's possible to uncheck these 2 option "Turn on fast startup" and "Hibernate" in the shutdown setting then it fix the "automatically restart". I did it and it work. But a week later after the latest MS update ... I got the BIOS issue as I describe from beginning.

So I don't know if I change the shutdown setting ... does it affect to the BIOS issue ???

Thanks.

P.S.: I'll reactivate those 2 option in the shutdown setting tonight to see if it fix the BIOS issue.

You have corrupted windows and possibly physically bad hard drive.

Its time for a clean install on a new drive. 17133.73 had “higher percentage” of Black and or White screen of Death.  This caused microsoft to pause 17134 feature updates. Microsoft demoting a build that it had internally deemed RTM is rather unprecedented.

Windows 10 Build 17134 RTM candidate of Windows 10 April 2018 Update aka 1803.

The Official Windows 10 April 2018 Update is Build 17134.619

1803 is gone now and its 1809 soon to be 1903 in 2 weeks.

There will never EVER be a successful rebuild or patch of this os on this drive.

A DESKTOP and now with a new RTC coin cell, smart idea that and is first thing 5-7years old. PC.

if the battery dies the NVram can not retain, BIOS configuration data, this fact causes and near endless list of CHOAS…  Some BIOS even has auto power one features and or if power lost turn back on, at AC restore and even has calendar (days) to turn on by it sell. and more even wake on features

now you learned why the PC acts crazy with a simple $1 coin cell dead.  (its the first thing to check on all PCs)

ok new coin.

first off you can remove the HDD and most of BIOS works, (not OS recovery  or other partition tools)

but the full OS is now gone and full HDD gone. (disk unplugged by you)

then test bios with power on then and hammer the F12 key , tap tap tap,  do not stop util you can gain access to the BIOS.  is this your first time at BIOS BAT, hammering a key, and the 3 second window of time unknown by you>?  hammer it gently non stop, if F12 fails use the other hot keys, ok? F2? or what the manual shows.

if fails do it again, this time SOONER< OK?

even a Linux boot demo DVD will run on this this PC or Linux Boot stick for sure Ubuntu v16 up (try me ) free cost and your blank burned disk.

see, the PC is not dead, see the shut downs do work. right? under LINUX.

you do not need a HDD to test MOST of this PC, just good old modern Linux, or even windows 7, PE boot disk.

Next?  if all that works ok,  put  back the old HDD, and run Lunux and click disktests, and run the full SMART test on that HDD now.  if fail BINGO./!!! the Linux runs full S.M.A.R.Ts V16 up.

so if smart told you the HDD is bad you can take that to the BANK,  for SURE> (ask a server guy this>>>>yah)
