xps 8930 upgraded PSU and Fans. Upgrade 1080 bios?
While I noticed some of you upgraded your Graphics cards, I was wondering if any of you that have performed this upgrade ended up upgrading the bios on your PSU throttled Dell distributed 1080?
I used the comments and threads by @Anonymous , @546insp , @HanoverB and others and had no problems upgrading my psu and fans TYVM BTW
However, my 8930 was purchased with a 1080 graphics card that I now find out is throttled I'm assuming to make room for the small PSU they used. Here are the details https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/195425/dell-gtx1080-8192-160904
I was wondering if anyone has replaced the bios in their cards, or if anyone would give caution? Should be able to reflash the original bios if this doesn't work (I have a lot of experience with flashing bioses), but don't want a brick. Hi, @Derek_32999 ,
Interesting observation!
This is an area where I have very little information/knowledge - however, I do have a query:-
Are you certain that any throttling, on the Dell Card is solely due to the Graphics BIOS - or could there be other proprietary changes made? If so, is there a possibility that using an ASUS BIOS, on a Dell Card, might be detrimental?

I have seen other forum guidance that states it is ok to use a higher power vbios to push a card, but not cross posting vbioses to different brands unfortunately. No proprietary things here afaik.

For me . . . that very little would be 'zero'. Just wondering; since the GTX 1080 is a nVidia graphics card, would it make more sense/create less potential problems to 'upgrade' with nVidia BIOS that does not have the PSU throttling? Do they even have that

Correct. Dell branded. Just going to have to see how much power increase standard software like Afterburner gives vs a vbios flash and weight risk v reward v difficulty.

FWIW, while monitoring with GPU-z (easier sensor readout that Afterburner) it does seem that I was hitting power threshold limits fairly often at 220W (which would limit my card). Only once did I actually throttle due to Thermal reasons, but I rode the line close enough to be cool with the results.

Sounds like Dell was trying to both limit Power & restrict Heating Issues!
