Re: BSOD: Driver Verifier DMA Violation with TB16 Docks

Jump to solution

I have now replicated the error with a second Logitech webcam, in this case the Logitech HD Webcam C615.  So both the Brio and C615 fail with the BSOD when connected to the XPS 13 9370 through the TB 16.  Both cameras work as intended when connected directly to the XPS 13 9370.  The TB 16 seems to function properly otherwise, i.e., keyboard, mouse, monitor and network connection appear fine.  But when the TB 16 is used in conjunction with either webcam, the BSOD results.  The verify / reset thing does not matter.  I am using up to date versions of Windows 10, firmware and all drivers.  I have tried different USB ports, etc.  This problem is real and I don't get the sense that anyone at Dell has attempted to replicate this in house.  Help!!!!

Today I attempted to connect a Cisco Precision HD Webcam.  Same result.  BSOD.

OK So I saw this error today. XPS 7390 with a TB16.  I also have a XPS 7390 with a Generic Dock that has no issues.

As a seasoned tech these are the steps I took.

1.) Uncheck the restart on Blue Screen  (old School Fix that stops blue screens from even occuring)

2.) Upgraded BIOS to 1.4 which came out 12/18/2019

3.) Install both dock drivers for Audio and Network.  Now is the waiting period to see if Blue Screen happens.

Dell you need to do more work n BIOS and Drivers before Shipping new units!  Unacceptable Blue Screen in 2019!

This freaking dock.  I think the latest drivers (1.16.59.1_A16) are buggy again, and I see under Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\asmtxhci\ParametersDmaRemappingCompatible seems to have changed from 0 (not compatible) to 2 (compatible) again.

In this case I had trouble once I enabled Hyper-V.  Same problems as I had previously where the system would freeze while I plugged it in and it enumerated the USB devices.

I have wiped the new drivers, along with the registry keys (Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\asmthub3Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\asmtxhci), and reinstalled the previous one (1.16.56.1_A13).  I stopped having issues after I did that.

Honestly, the awful experience with my XPS 9365 and TB16 led me to replace the XPS with an hp (both "work" with the dock, but with the same driver issues); it's the first non-Dell I've bought, but my support experience on this $2500+ pair has been so, so bad (and the fanless XPS is so, so slow).  Before I finally dug around and found the driver issues, Dell support tried to have me downgrade the firmware on the dock (it couldn't), and then said, "well, you're out of warranty, tough luck" (because I bought them days apart, and they wouldn't let me attach the dock to the system warranty, which I had upgraded to 4 years --- if I had bought them in the same order the dock warranty would have also been 4 years).  Meanwhile it was just a stupid driver issue.

I'm getting very close to giving up on the TB 16,  Can anyone a third party dock that actually works?  I need ethernet, HDMI and USB 3 support with a Thunderbolt connection to my XPS 13 9370.

I'm now playing around with a USB C connection to the TB 16.  A C to C cable to connect my Logitech Brio to the TB 16 seems stable, at least so far.  Also, connecting the Logitech Brio to a USB 3 port on my Dell U3818 monitor and then running the USB connection from the monitor to the USB C port on the TB 16 with a USB A to C adapter also seems to work.  My results are preliminary.

Just got the NEW XPS 13 7390 and TB16 Dock.

Having all the issues.

Nightmare.

Doing updates, testing.

Question here, replacing a 2 year old XPS 13 with this one, and if same issues continue, will consider different manufacturer.  Suggestions?

Top shelf lightweight powerful laptop with docking capabilities.

Thinkpad?  OR?

Spoke with support, the TB16 is a dead horse, the WD19 is the current replacement for the docking bar.

Hey Dell, what about my existing TB16 that is problematic, as well as the WD15 issues?

You gotta be kidding!
