Can I replace only one (of two) memory chips on Dell XPS 15 9550

Can I replace only one (of two) memory chips on Dell XPS 15 9550. I currently have 2 factory installed 8 GB chips. I bought one (1) 16 GB chip. Some laptops require that you replace both channels (chips); this would yield a 32GB of memory rather than 24 GB.  Please help.  Thank You

It may work but is not validated as compatible for that system. Also you will only have dual channel operation on the 8 GB RAM module and 8 GB of the 16 GB RAM module, if it works at all. Also the RAM is DDR4 2133 and if you bought a module with different speed then it will run at the speed of the slower module. Again if it works at all.The only way you will know is to try it.
