Cannot connect Dell 2312H to Dell XPS 15 9500
I have a Dell Monitor P2312H from 2013, and a newly bought Dell XPS 15 9500. I connected them using a VGA to HDMI and an HDMI adapter from my laptop, along with the USB cable from the monitor so everything is set up as expected. However, the monitor then says no VGA signal, and my laptop still doesn't detect any signal from the monitor. I search on Google and it says because Dell P2312H is incompatible with windows 10, but I also doubt if the VGA/HDMI has worked properly. What should I do in my case? Find a P2312H driver for windows 10 or buy a VGA/USB-C cable? Or any method can you suggest? thank you.

@steve nguyen It’s not entirely clear what you’ve got when you say you’re connecting with “a VGA to HDMI and an HDMI adapter”. When asking for technical assistance, it helps to be as specific as possible with your technical details. But the options mentioned above are good choices. First of all, VGA is the lowest quality option available, so try to avoid it. A USB-C to DVI cable is the simplest solution and would give you the best result. A USB-C to VGA cable is simple but won’t look as good, so I’d avoid it. If you get a DA300, you’d have to choose between either using inferior VGA, or else getting an HDMI to DVI or DisplayPort to DVI adapter/cable, since the DA300 doesn’t have a DVI output. The DA300 is also quite a bit more expensive than a simple cable, although you do get more functionality. The DA300 has also been replaced by the DA310, fyi.

HDMI ??
Did you mention correct monitor model number? neither monitor nor does XPS 9500 has any HDMI ports on them. Dell P2312H Only has VGA, DVI-D option.
Monitors are generic devices, there is no such thing as compatibility unless you have a monitor from stone age (earlier than VGA) .
Your options are.
1. Type C to DVD-D adapter (recomended)
2. Type C to VGA dongle.
3. Dell DA300 (I am using this) : This allows both VGA and HDMI monitors, also you get a single USB A port and a Gigabit ethernet port.

Hi XPS_Man, I have mentioned clearly that I used an hdmi adapter provided when I bought the XPS, and it turns out that mine vga/hdmi is a cable.

@steve nguyen Saying "HDMI adapter" is not "clear". Is that a simple USB-C to HDMI adapter? Is it a multi-purpose USB-C hub that has an HDMI output? Is it something else? Just saying "HDMI adapter" means there's some kind of adapter that has an HDMI output on it. That is not very specific, and sometimes when having tech issues, the details matter. So the more precise you can be in your descriptions, the more likely you'll be able to get useful assistance here. And if you don't know how to describe something any better, then sometimes posting pictures of the products you're using is a good idea. But if you had a USB-C to HDMI dongle and then an HDMI to VGA cable, that's a terrible setup. First, you end up using VGA, which is the worst option for image quality. And second, you're going through two active signal conversions. The USB-C to HDMI adapter will be converting the system's DisplayPort signal to HDMI, and then the HDMI to VGA cable would be converting an HDMI signal to VGA. Those aren't simple passive pin adapters; they are actually converting the format of the signal itself. And lastly, not all HDMI to VGA cables work the same way. Some are designed to connect an HDMI output to a VGA input. Others are meant to connect a VGA output to an HDMI input. Those are not interchangeable, so if you had the latter, that was never going to work.
