On the XPS 15 9560, both the USB-C and HDMI outputs are wired to the Intel GPU, and the NVIDIA GPU when required acts as a render-only device that passes completed frames to the Intel GPU for output to displays. That setup is called NVIDIA Optimus. As a result, you’d need FreeSync support on the Intel GPU since it’s the one physically controlling the display output. That said, you might ALSO need support from the NVIDIA GPU acting as the renderer. I’m not sure because variable refresh rate technologies have never been available in this type of multi-GPU design before.
