Dell TB16 docking station and XPS 13 2-in-1 - network adapter issues
I purchased a Dell TB16 docking station for my XPS 13 2-in-1. The "Realtek USB GbE Family Controller" network adapter is constantly getting added and removed in device manager. This is happening every 30 seconds.
I'm running Windows 10 with the latest updates. I've updated the BIOS, the graphics card driver, thunderbolt controller driver, ASMedia USB Extended Host Controller driver, Realtek USB GBE ethernet controller driver and the Reaktek USB Audio Driver, but with no luck.
I also have a Dell DA200 adapter. The ethernet connection on this works fine.
Any suggestions?

It looks like the issue was a rogue USB device. In this case it was a Plantronics Savi headset. Once I removed this, the network driver stopped getting added and removed.

Does that system have an update for its Thunderbolt firmware separate from the Thunderbolt driver? If so, try that. Additionally, there's a firmware update for the Realtek NIC in the dock. This link mentions the WD15, but the TB16 uses the same chip: https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=4DY25

I will check my system later today but right now the hidden device in Device Manager does not show the latest update from Dell.
Also, be careful because for some reason the two Ethernet adapter drivers in the Docks and Network sections have different release dates and the title is a little different. So I will be reinstalling those drivers later when I check my Dock operation.
Beyond that, any connection problems and your Ethernet works normally otherwise on other systems?

Make sure you are showing the driver version for the ASMedia eXtensible controller and you have rebooted the system.

Hi,
Did you ever resolve running the plantronics headset through the TB16 dock - I am seeing similar issues.
Thanks,
Mark.

I have the same issue and, thanks to this post, resolved by removing the Savi. Any further fixes for this issue?
Thanks!

This issue is due to the constant updates that Dell puts out or missing drivers. The new docks that use USB-C (tb16 and wd15) need 3 - 4 updates depending on the laptop. If you go to the link I provide bellow (Dell's TB16 drivers support page) you will see the drivers you need. Another way of finding out what you are missing is the Dell Command Update utility. This will scan your machine and help you find what the system is requiring, please run this a few times as you may have several updates that need to be installed.
Also, a big factor is the Bios version. If the Bios needs to be updated, please make sure that you suspend bit-locker if you have your hard drive encrypted before you install this update. This can be done in the control panel / bit-locker and click on suspend, once the update is finished and the machine is rebooted, bit-locker will resume as normal automatically.
If you don't do this, and your machine is encrypted, you will be locked out of the system as the Key is now lost due to the Bios flash update.
If your machine is not encrypted (bit-locker is off) , then you can install the update with out any issues.
Even if all of the drivers for the dock where installed initially, there have been several versions released over the past year. It's very easy to install all of the drivers and make sure you have the latest versions.

I hope this helps...
