Dell XPS 15 Laptop - salvage project :-|

Hi,

Have Dell XPS 15 Laptop which has decided not to start up.

Auto-repair has hung, fear the worst.

May need to remove HDD to salvage files.

Take it this will be a 2.5" C-drive?

Have an Inateck docking system, so I should be able to pull the XPS HDD and copy my files to another drive, I can't see another way round this disaster?

Advice appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome to the Dell Community  @kr236rk02

To better assist you, the members would need the exact model number of your laptop/desktop???

Identify your Dell:

https://www.dell.com/support/contents/us/en/04/category/product-support/self-support-knowledgebase/l...

What is the model number of your HDD/SSD???

Best regards,

U2

Thank you,

You now have my service tag by PM.

Hopefully this will identify the HDD.

@kr236rk02

A Dell representative may have your "Service Tag" to check your warranty status but we in the community need your exact model number.

Also do you know if the drive is M.2 or SATA???

U2

I note your records indicate that the system warranty has expired. Thank you. I could have told you that.

My interest is, if the laptop cannot be revived, to get as many files as possible off the C-drive.

Please advise.

You are asking me to remove or uncover the HDD to record its number please?

@kr236rk02

NO, you could go into the BIOS and see if it indicates what type of drive you have installed???

OR, you could search your "Service Tag" to see what type of drive was installed when manufactured.

https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/?l=en

Then again you could just wait until you remove the drive to find out if your Docking Station has the correct interface.

Sorry for the time wasted.

Good luck,

U2

Re: Dell XPS 15 Laptop - salvage project :-|

The laptop is on 'zombie', lights on, no-one at home. So no bios.

The service tag's support page gives the following XPS 15 L502X

It shows pictures of the drive but does not identify it.

Sorry, what is the point of using the docking station - to clone the drive - will that help?

Ideally, I do need to access the C-drive so I can remove files to a healthy drive. Don't see that I need to clone the entire drive though. What are my options?

Thanks.

Update.

Managed to get into BIOS.

HDD ST9750420AS

BIOS A06

Laptop back on 'startup repair' which seems to be a loop - it never gets anywhere.
