Dell XPS 9570 Overheating Issues

Hi, my new XPS 9570 (i7-8750, 8g RAM, 1050Ti, 1080p Screen) overheats very easily and shuts down.

It doesn't appear to CPU throttle, it just runs itself until it overheats (CPU gets to over 96 C).

When it overheats, the system does 1 of 2 things, it either:

1) automatically shuts down

2) the screen goes blank, however the Laptop stays on (fans running, keyboard lit, screen light remains on, but you can't see anything on the screen). It appears to be running, but you can't see anything and the laptop can't be turned off for 5-10 minutes.

It is not consistent either. I've played a very demanding video game sometimes for a few hours with no issues, and sometimes it overheats within minutes. Both these scenarios happen with no other programs running.

On another game, when I am on the Start Menu (not even in game), with no other programs running, the CPU will suddenly jump to 85+ C and the GPU will jump to 75+ C. Again, this is on the start menu, with nothing but some menu buttons and an image on the screen.

My problem is that I've never had a laptop that seems to overheat so quickly at times when there should be almost no demand on it or its CPU and GPU (again, there is no throttling, it just overheats and shuts down). In addition, I am worried that this overheating could be causing damage to the CPU or GPU which will lead to a lower life expectancy of this product.

I'm wondering if this is a common issue with the XPS, or is this something wrong with my laptop?

Seems clock downthrottling via Intel DPTF isn't functional.

Check the new BIOS 1.1.4.

I have the same issue.

Even after updating to  the BIOS  1.1.4. it is not guaranteed to solve it .

For my case it is not solved and the guideline for dell technical support is to replace the motherboard.

Hi @GioPap / @x2012Michael / @samos1111

A new BIOS was released yesterday to address thermal performance. Can you install version 1.2.2 and let me know if you are still having issues please.

Hello Alan ,

My laptop was updated with the new Bios yesterday.

Still my graphic intensive apps are freezing after some minutes of use.

The problem persists

Hi @GioPap, does it shutdown regardless of whether you run it on battery or ac power?

What power plan are you running on the system when this happens?

As per the post near the bottom of this thread, can you check your settings for the Intel Thermal Dynamic Platform and let me know what they are set to as per the image on the thread.

Re: Dell XPS 9570 Overheating Issues

Hello Alan,

Currently the system freezes after some minutes of graphics intense use .

From that point no app is accessible.

If i stress it further it shuts down.

I am running on Better Performance power plan always plugged in.

@GioPap thanks for the update. When you say it freezes, can you provide more information about exactly what happens i.e is it a full system lockup that you cant recover from or does the system resume normal operation if you leave it for a few minutes?

Do you get any thermal warnings or error messages once this occurs?

What applications are you using that encounters this issue?

Lastly, if you set the TDP threshold to low, do you still get shutdowns but at a lower temp?

Re: Dell XPS 9570 Overheating Issues

Hello Alan,

It is a full system lockdown.

The only way through it is to hard shutdown the PC from the power button.

If i leave the screen frozen for long then i get a blue-screen .

Normally it happens with graphics demanding apps like

Games (even low end ) and with virtual desktops that i use .

I have used some apps to record the thermal behavior of the laptop and gets over 94 easily .

Lately i have noticed that when i open the in idle state with minimum apps open it gets over 80 which is not normal for me .

I will try lowering the TDP but this should not be a solution for a 3800$ laptop
