TB 16 Dock Thunderbolt Flashing (Black screen)

Hello All, I have one XPS 15 9570 with one TB 16 Dock Thunderbolt and it sometimes flash the screen in black for a second, this is the second unit I have... I replace the other thinking the problem was with my unit. I have the BIOS 1.10 and the latest firmware for the TB16, I also try with different watts the 180W and the 240W and the same problem. my workaround for now is disconnect and reconnect the USB Thunderbolt cable however I think this should be fix in some way. Firmware: MST1: 3.12.002 MST2: 3.12.002 ASM USB 3.0 Cntr: 10.11.A9 Dock NVM 00.00.27 Cable: NVM 00.00.16 Dell TB TI v1.2.11 Per Controller1: 01.02.11 Dell TB16 TI v1.2.32 Dell TB16 Dock EC Dell TB16 Cable PD 00.03.12 Any solution? I believe I’m not the only person.

Thank you for your message. How often does the screen flash?

Does this happen when using any application in particular?

Is the issue observed when the system is used as a standalone & when not connected to the docking station?

Do you have a 4K monitor connected to the system?

Is the issue observed when you wake the system from sleep mode?

For my reference, please click on the message tab next to your avatar– click “New Message” & search for my Dell username (Sreejith R) & send a private message with the service tag, registered name & email address.

How to locate the service tag

I'm running into this as well, I don't have a 4k external monitor but my laptop screen is 4k, would that make a difference?

for me it happens whenever I wake up my laptop when I lock my screen during my lunch hour

I saw if you switch from a hdmi to a displayport cable it'd resolve the problem, is that true?

I don´t think so :( because I have 2 monitors one displayport and the other connected to HDMI.

I just did a reinstall of my driver and it fixed one other issue so I'll wait and see if it resolves this issue for me as well

Hello.

My five co-workers and I also have an XPS 15 9570 with TB16 docking station, and are suffering the exact same problem. We have an external HD monitor connected to the dock, and we get a black screen which lasts ~1 second several times per day. That's really annoying.

We all have Windows 10 drivers up to date. But Dell support keeps asking us to update them because that may be the problem.

Dell sent us a dock firmware upgrade utility (DellDockingStationFwUp_1.0.2_12052018_TB16), but it complains about the Thunderbolt driver not being installed. Actually, the logs say that the problem is the drivers being too new (we have version TBT79_WIN_17.4.79.510_A12, which is the current, but the firmware upgrade utility says that the version must be less or equal than 3.39.250 ).
We keep complaining to Dell since 5 months ago now, yet no other response from Dell than that. This is unacceptable.

I've managed to download old Thunderbolt driver version 1.41.645, and I've been able to use the dock firmware upgrade utility, which has upgraded the following:

ASM USB 3.0 Cntlr from 10.11.23 to 10.11.A9
Dock NVM from 00.00.16 to 00.00.27

The rest of "modules" (MST, ...) were already up to date.

It seems that now ASM USB 3.0 Cntlr is **bleep** up. Dock USB ports don't work now, and upgrade utility says that there is a problem with ASM USB device. And the black screen problem is happening as well.

This is outrageous. Never buy Dell docks again.

Regards.

I uninstalled the Intel display driver and let windows update install the driver for me and the problem went away. One small caveat, windows will try to get update to a newer version which breaks thing again so I had to revert to the working version (23.20.16.4973) which after that windows won't do it anymore or at least not try to update to that version again.

Hello,

Try to remove all drivers and flash the latest firmware because it fixed my issue

I don´t have 4K monitor but I have 2x Full HD and it fixed my problem...

It is true that some people say that you must buy the 240w version for 2x 4K monitors.

Cheers!
