XPS 13 9300, BIOS 1.0.10, USB Type-C to DP adapters no longer work

Hi there,

Just updated my BIOS to 1.0.10   this morning. It apparently updates the firmware of the TB3/USB Type-C port. Probably solves some Power Delivery issues.

Unfortunately, after the update, DisplayPort is no longer working properly over USB Type-C. I have tried four different adapters, and only one works sporadically after the update.

I did a search on Reddit and apparently I am not alone.

I am unable to downgrade the BIOS back to 1.0.7 despite having "allow bios downgrade" option enabled in BIOS. Some of the updated firmware do not roll back.

Anyone having these issues too?

@describee it's interesting that that one adapter works, I wonder what's different about it. My new hub was supposed to come today, but Amazon is late at delivering it... Will report back soon...

Hi all - I just wanted to report that I received my USC hub (which includes HDMI) and it works perfectly. Individual adapters still do not work.

Product, FYI: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07M6R3CPB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thanks. Your hub adapter only seems to support 4k@30hz though. It seems most of the 4k@60hz (hdmi 2.0) adapters have issues.

I've been checking in with Dell but basically they are only willing to escalate the issue only if more people report the issue. Therefore if you have the same troubles please open a new thread to bring this to Dell's attention.

I have random disconnects on a Caldigit DP adapter after upgrading to 10.0.11 from 10.0.7. After upgrade I also have a lot of problems connecting to USB devices, like keyboard and mouse. I have to disconnect and reconnect a couple of times to get it to work.

@describee I also have a ticket with Support. Since they need to fix my webcam anyway, I sent in the laptop over the weekend. I wrote in the comments it worked on 1.0.7 but does not work on subsequent BIOS versions.

@sawsc thanks for highlighting this. Suggest you start a new thread to bring this to Dell's attention (the bot will automatically contact you after you post and you can escalate from there)

This is the response I just got from Dell. Seriously, I give up lol. A simple thing as escalating to their engineers JUST TO REPORT THE ISSUE and they are unwilling to do so.

Thank you so much for getting back to us. Sadly Dell will not be liable for the outcome of resolution provided by the third party hardware, being that you are using a USB Type-C to DP adapter your query falls outside the scope of support of your warranty.

At this time, we would suggest to check with the forum users so they can provide you with further assistance regarding this particular problem.

We apologize for the inconvenience this might generate.

The finding from me is it is not working on WD19 docking but working on a cheaper USB hub.... thanks for Dell for pushing us to buy something cheaper.

My USB-C to HDMI adapter (https://amzn.to/2MevG3l) delivered 4k @ 60hz on my old Lenovo machine, but is limited to 30hz on my new XPS 13 9300. Tried via direct connection and via my Caldigit TS3 Plus dock - both result in being limited to 30hz.

I have an Active DisplayPort to HDMI adapter on order which I'll hook up via the Caldigit TS3 Plus dock, but if that doesn't work then I'll sadly be returning my new XPS 13...

I sent my XPS in on 5/26, to get this fixed in addition to replacing the webcam (stopped working randomly).

I'm still waiting on updates from Dell...

Has anyone heard any updates from Dell about this? It's pretty embarrassing that a bios update broke such a basic and needed function...

I'm missing the old days when we didn't need type-c adapters for every need......

Hi all,

For those experiencing issues, I have tried the following adapters which seem to work:

- CableMatters USB-C to HDMI: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MFW2G3K/

- Choetech Thunderbolt 3 to dual DisplayPort 1.2: https://www.amazon.com/CHOETECH-Certified-Thunderbolt-DisplayPort-Compatible/dp/B075T6BBQD

- Cablecreations USB-C to HDMI (Had the DisplayPort limited issue initially but somehow started working this week): https://www.amazon.com/CableCreation-Adapter-Thunderbolt-Compatible-Chromebook/dp/B0123PJ9BK

Hope this helps while pending a resolution from Dell.

These two adapters seem to work fine and stable even on the latest BIOS. Meanwhile, I've had trouble with a j5create 4k 60hz adapter: https://en.j5create.com/products/jca153 and also had trouble with several other DisplayPort 1.4 docks.

I had my XPS 9300 replaced for a separate issue and my new unit came with 1.0.6. video output is more stable on 1.0.6 definitely, and I've made a video of the two systems side by side and posted it to Dell.

For anyone interested, I found an escalation path within Dell for this issue. I wrote up a problem report about this, including a link to this thread.  I can't promise anything will come out of it of course, but I just wanted to let you all know that I'm trying to get this issue communicated to people who might be able to fix it.

Thanks @jphughan - I really hope Dell acknowledges this issue and expedites a fix. In the meantime I'll be taking a look at Dell's return policy to make sure I don't get screwed

I received my new adapter today (https://amzn.to/375UioA) to connect it to my CalDigit TS3+ dock and the issue remains. Not happy about playing this buy-a-bunch-of-adapters-and-see-what-works game!

Does anyone know of a confirmed-working DisplayPort to HDMI adapter (connected via a Thunderbolt dock)?

I've been DMing with Dell support on Twitter about this issue and they've been nothing but a waste of my time - asking me to do things folks in this thread have already tried, asking me to define the problem 3 times, etc.

If the next adapter I have on the way doesn't work, I'm going to send this machine back to Dell and file a complaint with the BBB. It's completely inexcusable for a machine of this cost and specs to be limited to 4k @ 30Hz, and I'm surely not going to wait around past my return window hoping they'll release another BIOS update to fix it. So much for "Thunderbolt 3" ports...
