XPS 13-9380 Thunderbolt Controller Driver Update A10 fails to install repeatedly

The dell SupportAssist wanted me to update the Intel Thunderbolt Controller Driver Version: 17.4.77.400, File Name: Intel-Thunderbolt-Controller-Driver_886C9_WIN_17.4.77.400_A10.EXE

Repeatedly the install fails.

I've downloaded it direct from the Dell site, same problem.

I'm getting the idea this is a typical problem, but there is no simple solution?

PS - I've updated the BIOS to the latest first.

There is now a BIOS update that appears to remove the need for the Thunderbolt Controller Driver.  If you update the BIOS and uninstall the Thunderbolt Controller Software, after the reboot you should be able to utilize your dock.  DCU or Support Assist if run again will still show the Thunderbolt as recommended but it apparently is being phased out, thankfully.

The install will normally give you a path to an install log...  Have you checked that?

I had some similar issues with the XPS 15 9550 TB driver and firmware (firmware was unrecognized and I couldn't update it). Re-installing the TB Controller Driver didn't help.

Resolved it by uninstalling the Thunderbolt Controller Driver, rebooting, then re-installing the Controller Driver, and rebooting again.

Above might be worth trying to fix the issue with the XPS 13 9380.

@MarkusKO, the log you provided seems to be a rollback log, is that the only one you have an is the one referenced at the bottom?

Dear all,

Now it worked:

1) Deinstalled Thunderbolt device (Device Manager)

2) Do NOT Reboot

3) Install the Thunderbold driver

--> Success !

Thx to all for your inputs!

Have had the same issue for over a week. Can confirm that deleting the Thunderbolt Controller Driver in Device Manager and then manually installing the A10 update (download at https://www.dell.com/support/home/ca/en/cabsdt1/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=886c9 ), followed by a restart, will result in a successful install and the Dell SupportAssist correctly registers the installation. Thanks so much for figuring this out.

I followed these steps on my brand new 9380 and got the driver to finally install.

However, upon restart I now get an error when the computer restarts each time that the Thunderbolt Software is no longer in use and can be safely deleted.

I see there is the Thunderbolt Control Center and an app called Thunderbolt Software. Can the software app really be deleted?

Me too, after reboot i got the error "This Thunderbold application is not use anymore and can be safety uninstalled".

Looking on the web I resolved the issue as the follow:

  1. Uninstall Thunderbolt Controller from Device Manager (check the box "Delete the driver software for this device")
  2. Run "Command prompt" as administrator and launch the command: sc delete nhi
  3. If present uninstall Thunderbolt Software from Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features
  4. Install the Thunderbold driver (https://www.dell.com/support/home/ca/en/cabsdt1/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=886c9)
  5. Reboot

... of course, execute the commands at your own risk

I still can't get it to install... even following the steps above. just rollbacks everytime. This is the second driver update I've had that just won't install, the other being the chipset drivers.

Hi,

not sure if your problem is solved. I'm no expert at computers myself but when I tried to install the thunderbolt driver a notification would pop up saying "Installation failed." For me after I first installed something called the "Thunderbolt Controller Application." from dell the installation worked.
