XPS 13 9380 camera issues

Laptop: Dell XPS 13 9380

Some times integrated camera works, some times it doesn't work.

Use case: The laptop is connected to the Dell docking station with 2 screens, and it is closed. I disconnect it from the docking station, open it, go to Skype > Settings > Audio & Video, and the camera is either working or not.

When the camera works fine, it is detected as "Integrated webcam" > https://prnt.sc/pznj3i

When the camera doesn't work, it is detected as "Sonix Technology" > https://prnt.sc/pznj9f (same driver's version).

https://prnt.sc/pznjok
VID_0C45&PID_6723 for Integrated Webcam
VID_0C45&PID_6365 for Sonix

All drivers including BIOS were updated.

Tried disabling, restarting and enabling the camera in BIOS > https://prnt.sc/pznmj7
Helped, but after a couple of hours - same problem - black screen, not working.

Did some tests in BIOS > https://photos.app.goo.gl/jrcsEMv6aT4gbeQW9

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Ronnie,

I have the same issue with an integrated webcam in an Inspiron 15 7000 2-in-1 showing the same device Hardware id VID_0c45&PID_6365, except that it yet never worked and always showed up as Sonix Tech Co., Ltd. So any help on this would be highly appreaciated, this is on a Win10 1909 64bit, latest Windows and Dell patches applied.

Thanks so far

Hi,

is there a solution to the built in camera problems. I have the neweset firmware and drivers installed, but skype does not see the camera.

I got a message from Dell saying my xps13 is out of guarantee. I am really upset with that.

When I got this expensive machine I used skype once or twice and the webcam worked fine. After that I did not use the webcam until a week ago. Again with skype but it didn´t work. Today I installed the new firmware and drivers but it does not change. About an hour ago I had 5 seconds a working camera. Then the setting screen in video and microfone of skype got black and after some more seconds it couldn´t find the camera anymore.

So the camera is working but the system not. And it is obviously a known problem to Dell and probably there from the beginning.

I was thinking about buying a new XPS and handing this one to somebody else, but I won´t anymore.

I think this is a total scam. My camera was working just fine. But as soon as my warranty expires I see this camera problem. I can not use skype, I can not do video calls on Facebook. If I want to get it fixed I have to renew my warranty, which means spend more money. I bought this laptop in 2017 and this particular problem exists since 2012. Are you tell me you still do not have a solution for this?

As I can see, my problem is nothing new and I feel betrayed by Dell. I am happy with my XPS but I dont want to have an external webcam or use my cellphone as webcam.

I repeat my request to Dell to find a solution. I have to decide if going on buying Dell or switch to a new supplier. This includes the decision for company.

kind regards
