Hello, I recently bought the XPS 13 Plus 9320 from Dell. I got it August 16 so it hasn’t even been a month of ownership. This problem started yesterday when I did a driver update, When I shutdown the laptop, it turns back on in even when the lid is down and this causes the battery to drain when I come back to use it? I contacted Dell and they went through a couple of things and nothing worked. After the factory reset the product. And still this problem occurs. Do I have a defective product, and what do I do?

Users with 1.7.1 BIOS installed =
* Enter The BIOS
* Go to Power
* Click "LOAD DEFAULTS" button
* Go to Lid Switch
- Is "Enable Lid Switch" set to ON?
- Is "Power On Lid Open" currently set to ON?

Users with 1.6.0 BIOS still installed =
* Enter The BIOS
* Go to Power
* Click "LOAD DEFAULTS" button
* Go to Lid Switch
- Is "Enable Lid Switch" set to ON?
- Is "Power On Lid Open" currently set to ON?

* Launch CMD as Admin
* Type CD\ [press Enter]
* Type powercfg /spr duration 28 [press Enter]

Send the completed HTML sleep study report to GHN agent via one of their previous sent private messages.

For one user, we found out that they were installing the BIOS 1.7.1 on battery only. In my opinion, that should never be done.

If you currently have BIOS 1.7.1 installed =
* Connect the provided external power adapter to the Laptop
* The Laptop is not connected to any dock, external monitor, printer, drives, etc.
* Download/save BIOS 1.6.0 to the Windows Desktop
* Download/save BIOS 1.7.1 to the Windows Desktop
* Right click BIOS 1.6.0 and Run as administrator
* When done, the Laptop will restart
* Once back on the Windows Desktop, right click BIOS 1.7.1 and Run as administrator
* When done, the Laptop will restart

Then test.

Update = All users should be testing the newer BIOS releases.

I am on 1.7.1 and loaded "BIOS defaults" when I checked, both settings were on. I will PM you my sleep study file.

Joined this thread as I have the same problem.  I did not know it was possible to install BIOS on battery power alone:-) but I may well have installed it while in its Dell Dock so I decided to followed the advice above.  I had BIOS 1.7.1 installed.

* Download/save BIOS 1.7.1 <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> to the Windows Desktop <<Done
* Right click BIOS 1.6.0 and Run as administrator <<Done
* When done, the Laptop will restart <<Done - Note: Loaded defaults at boot and the let restart continue 
* Once back on the Windows Desktop, right click BIOS 1.7.1 and Run as administrator <<<Weirdly after I logged in windows desktop notification told me "Restarted required, your PC needs to restart to finish setting up device, System Firmware 1.7.1" I saw weirdly as I had not run the 1.7.1 installer!  Out of interest I restarted and sure enough it installed 1.7.1
* When done, the Laptop will restart <<Done - Note: Loaded defaults at boot, In Lid Switch  "Enable Lid Switch" set to ON - Yes and "Power On Lid Open" currently set to ON Yes and the let restart continue. 

I am out the rest of the day but will test shut down this evening.

Hi, thank you for loading BIOS to defaults. The sleep study will not show a restart after a shutdown. We would request you to downgrade the BIOS to observe if the issue resolves and then you can upgrade the BIOS back to the latest.

We will then use this information to reach out to the engineering team for further review.

Yep exactly the same here, will follow instructions but you would have thought an organisation of Dell's size would have tested thoroughly and resolved the issue a bit quicker.

Replying back to say I still have the issue and I've said this to "DELL-Cares" in PM as well. (as well as there being ALL of the people on this forum who have this issue)

Downgrading does make a difference:-) under my "old" 1.7.1 install when the PC shut down and all lights went off the power switch had no effect, either short or long press, it just sat there doing nothing and then in in its own time ~20+ seconds it would start up again with no input. 

I noticed when I down graded to 1.6.0 immediately after it shut down/lights out (call me inpatient if you like!) I touched the power button the keyboard lights came on and it booted.  Does that help?

I can downgrade again and run the report requested if it is really needed, will just need a day or two to do it.  Thanks, Peter

I dont know if this help.

But just let your guys know i have the same problem.

I've follow the instruction given above by...
1. Plug in power, do not use battery.

2. download 1.6.0 firmware, run as administrator. And flash it.

3. i press F2 , goes to firmware setting =, make sure Enable Lid Switch" set to ON - and "Power On Lid Open" 

4. i don't know why, once i finished downgrade firmware to 1.6.0. 

It forced reboot and started to flashing firmware again.

When it is done, i go to windows and check firmware.

It just goes back to 1.7.1.

But once i shutdown my PC. It won't turn back on again...
Problem solved ?

PS. in BIOS, i pressed "loading BIOS to defaults" as well.
But i didn;t mess with any setting in BIOS.

Just set maximum battery charge to 85% (Try to extend battery life)

I followed the steps as presented by Dell-Chris M and described by peterwbaker as above and I fixed the issue. In my experience of having system restarting many times, the critical notes in fixing this are: (1) to disable the Auto BIOS Update when install BIOS 1.6.0, and (2) using the right-click mouse command "Run as Administrator".
