XPS 15-9750 Windows 10 1809 to 1903 Upgrade Problem

Hi All,

Has anyone else been having issues with the 1903 upgrade, I have tried over 5 times to complete upgrade and they have all failed. Using the Windows Update "Download and Install" option it downloads installs then reboots and generally fails at 11% just booting back into 1809.

I have tried deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder and fresh downloading as well as using the Windows Upgrade Assistant to re-download with all failing.

All my Dell Updates and Windows Updates are installed and up to date, Does anyone have any workarounds I can try?

Or is this a more common issue and I should wait for future updates to hopefully patch the bug!

I can't tell what this install file is for but it does look like it is part of the problem, at least..

wavesapo75de.inf

If it is the one for you mouse then maybe uninstall it.  If you don't know, look for the .inf file and the Windows\INF folder and edit or open it so you can read the heading as to who wrote it and what devices it might be for.

There are also a bunch of warnings about HardDrive0 partition2 not having a volume name..  I do not know if this has any relevance and are just warnings which will not normally stop an upgrade.

Welcome to the Dell Community  @RyanMJ

Make sure no other devices are connected.

Do you have 32GB or more of free HDD space???

Best regards,

U2

Check the link below and see what you think.  It is supposed to look at log files and find a reason what a particular install fails.  Do not delete anything after a failed install so all logs are left in place.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/upgrade/setupdiag

The one log I know about which my contain pertinent info related to your problem is the setupact.log which is probably in one of the $Windows.xxxx folders in the Panther directory.  If you want to make it available on your OneDrive I will check it but in many cases, I cannot determine the exact cause.  Check the date and time of the file to make sure it coincides with the failed install attempt.

@U2CAMEB4ME

No have over 80GB free and no external devices so don't think conflict.

@Saltgrass

Thanks for link currently saying can't find log file in default location so will try doing another upgrade tonight and then run setupDiag again and see what it finds.

See if my link may help you out, can't guarantee it, but I did have problems on the 9570 xps twice to update https://www.dell.com/community/XPS/Windows-10-Pro-Build-1903-from-1809/td-p/7307188

You might want to try downloading the Media Creation Tool and let it generate a USB flash installation drive. There have been some issues with installing from that so If you copy the contents of the installation flash drive to your hard drive, it seems to be more reliable. I just upgraded three computers that way.

Are you running any 3rd party AV? The only other option you might have is to look through the Windows Update log and try to find what it doesn't like.

@IraFThanks for the link and your work around looking at how you got it working looks to confirm what I suspect from setupdiag that update failing to read a file off SSD for some reason after boot.

@johnptdWill try your suggestion of a USB upgrade and see if gives solution to upgrade issue. No third party AV or conflicting software as far as troubleshooter says.

The report seems to indicate it cannot find a driver file for some device.  Have you previously had any problems with any of your devices?

Have you disconnected most external devices and disabled whatever you can in the Bios, such as Bluetooth and perhaps even Wi-Fi?  I have seen some folks having the Killer Wireless card drivers removed, so it may be related to that.  You might even try updating those from the Killer Wireless site prior to doing the upgrade.

See if you can find this file:  setupapi.dev.log

If you want, make the setupact.log available and I will try to go through it.  If you want to check, open the file and go to the bottom, then search up for the error mentioned.  You may be able to find the entries regarding a failed driver install.

Hi @Saltgrass

Below is the latest I got trying a DVD upgrade of 1903, wouldn't allow USB stick upgrade.

Annotation 2019-06-21 153235.jpg

Below is a OneDrive link to setupapi.dev.log & Logs.zip which is log output from setupdiag.exe, only thing that stands out to me is that goes on a lot about my Razer Bluetooth mouse in setupact.log, would not have thought this would be conflicting as should be able to skip if not compatible and tell me after upgrade!

I can't see you attachment yet..

One log mentions a couple of things, but doesn't really say they are showing errors.  The first is related the PC Doctor which Dell uses as part of it diagnostic process.

It also mentions a file, iqvw64e.sys, which seems to be part of an Intel network diagnostic process.  The OEM48.inf is the install file associated with that install.  The .inf files are in the Windows directory INF folder.  The driver may show as one for your wireless adapter.

I will have to go to another system with a larger screen to check the other files.

I was able to get four of my systems to install using a 32 GB USB drive.  All four had previously failed using a smaller drive.  If you decide to try this, don't use one larger than 32 GB but exactly 32 GB and don't use Rufus to set it up.  On my installs, the USB drive became a problem prior to the first reboot of the upgrade.

Can only assume that the .inf file is part of the Waves MaxxAudio Pro Application, will try uninstalling it and see as just seems to be a sound modification add-on application driver set and not part of the primary sound drivers.

Partition structure is as RecoveryAssistant built it when I had to reinstall via the cloud option, but it doesn't have a label, can only think its a buffer for changes to the efi partition size.

DISKPART> list partition

Partition ### Type Size Offset
------------- ---------------- ------- -------
Partition 1 System 500 MB 1024 KB
Partition 2 Reserved 128 MB 501 MB
Partition 3 Primary 464 GB 629 MB
Partition 4 Recovery 990 MB 464 GB
Partition 5 Recovery 10 GB 465 GB
Partition 6 Recovery 1090 MB 475 GB

I finally managed to succeed steps I took, 1) Unistalled WaveMaxx app and deleted wavesapo75de... folder from C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository I left the newer wavesapo77de... folder. 2) Unistalled Razer Synapse software 3) Disabled Bluetooth in bios (NOT Wireless) 4) Attempted install from windows update, failed no error. Used Windows Upgrade Assistant to download fresh copy and upgrade, completed successfully. Hopefully this can be of some help to someone who experiences the same issues as me with 1903 upgrade.
