XPS 15 Hinge Issues (widespread?)

I've seen several posts about this issue but would like to know just how widespread it is.

I have 2 XPS 15 laptops (a 9560 and a 9570) both have an issue with the left screen hinge. The 9560 got so bad that the screen can't be opened anymore and the laptop ha. and it bent the bottom cover. The 9570 is headed in that direction but not that bad. I have a colleague with a 9560 that had the exact same problem. My business has used exclusively Dell equipment up to this point and while we have never had a problem with any of our desktop workstations or monitors, the XPS 15 laptops that have given me countless headaches.

Anybody else have this problem? How did Dell address it? and has the problem been addressed in a newer version of the laptop?

Really love the specs of the XPS 15 and the display quality but not inclined to ever get another at this point

It seems i got the same issue as described here.

(Added a photo below)

The hinge seemed a bit loose and i removed the cover to check, the inner screw came off by itself.

Looking at it, it is clearly the screw that retains the hinge .

I called Dell customer service to ask to repair it under my extended warranty and they said that is probably a damage caused by an accident and that it would probably not bw covered.

They will check my photo and they will come back in few days.

In any case, there was no such accident. As this thread shows, we can see photos that show the same problem.

I guess I am not the only one then. Just realized this issue, and search online for a solution, and found this post. Does anyone have any luck on how to get it to fix? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have the same issue with my precision 5520. Would appreciate if anybody from Dell can publish a replacement guide for that hinge.

Yes it is widespread.

Mine just broke today, what a nice Christmas Gift Dell.

Honeslty, given all the headaches I had with my Dell XPS 9560 (overheating, throttling, battery dying < 1 year, and this broken hinge) + Work precision laptop whom motherboard fried in less than 6 months with light use, you should aknowledge once and for all that you have an engineering and quality control issues.

Hence I will never ever buy a Dell laptop again.
When I read your waranty doesn't even take this in charge or that you customer support dare to say to impacted users it must comes from an accident, it's unacceptable.
I took great care of both laptops, both broke apart.

A real shame for such expensive laptops.

If you are out of warranty :

comfortable with DIY repair at low cost ----> epoxy glue

or buy a full palm rest assembly for $50 on ebay and mount it.

I am using Dell laptops & desktops for my home and work for last 22 years. Their products quality if very poor lately and switching to Apple even though it costs more. I have same issue with hinge on left side for my Dell laptop xps 15. NEVER buy dell laptop and its not worth to go thru the pain.

I have the same issue on a 9550. On the left hinge, the holding part of the chassis broke off without any force or improper use. Short of buying a completely new palmrest (price is not too steep but moving all parts to the new palmrest would be a pain) I opted to glue the broken off part back in with epoxy glue. Until now it is holding firmly and I hope it will for still some time because the computer itself is still working fine.

I am facing exact same issue! Now the battery is heating up and is pushing the mouse pad out. This is sad to see its a wide issue. But has anyone had this resolved?

I have had the same issue on the top left hinge of my 9560 after only 2.5 years. Dell needs to address this promptly as it is clearly a engineering/manufacturing mistake. Unacceptable for such an expensive laptop.

Hi,

Just to say that I bought Dell xps15 back in October and the L.H hinge is somewhat loud... Sometimes I get a snappy sound as if something is breaking.. like a piece of plastic... Really makes me worried, I am not sure how to address this with Dell..Shall I wait until it snaps and then call them in for replacement or something.. I am not sure..

Hi there,

I am very sorry to hear that you are facing somewhat same issue.

If you are withing your one year warranty Id advice you to contact Dell immediately.

Unfortunately Dell has responded very poorly in regards to this wide spread problem. I was already aware that my warranty had expired but I was just hoping that Dell would shed some light on this issue which is clearly a manufacturing fault that some how is causing this snap of the left hinge. The only action I received from Dell on this page was informing me that my warranty had expired. No further information or advice was given on this issue or how to resolve it. The least what I would have appreciated was some guidance of what parts I may have needed to change.

I would like to declare that I am no expert or specialist and the information bellow is just for your information only.

With some further investigation it had come to my attention that the battery was expanding creating some tension and over heating. Along the way where the hinge is attached to the body a piece where it gets connected with a screw had become detached leaving a loose hinge. This gives pressure to the back cover every time you open the laptop. It will only cause more damage to the bodywork as the hinge is bulging out with nothing holding it in its place.

Here's some things I had done to resolve the issue as dell was unfortunately useless in this process. (sorry Dell)

1. Initially  the best way to resolve this was to replace the palm rest. But this was too expensive.

2. My trusted local welded the pieces and replaced a hinge. And to cause any further damage I replaced the battery... works all fine.

3. I noticed to open the laptop from the center and not the sides.

This is for your information only.

Though evidently any further delay will cause only more damage.

Goodluck!

I have the same issue. I have the extended warranty. I called Dell, they took a day to tell me it was covered and to send in the laptop. Took for ever to get thing going I guess because of snow storm in Texas. Just got a call telling me I have to pay for it. They say accidental warranty would have covered it. But computer was not in accident. It didn't get dropped. Did not fall. Did not get bumped. I was not cracking wall nuts with it. The hinge failed though normal use because of bad design or bad material.
