Aurora R10, Bios 2.10.0 fails to install

Bios 2.10.0 that was posted on 1-13-25 for Alienware R10 gives this error message when I try to install it:

Error : Driver Version Fail !

I am on Bios 2.9.1 which installed fine less than one month ago.  Never had this error with any other bios update.

Hi everyone,

The steps below shall help mitigate the issue. As soon as new BIOS updates are available, they will be added to Dell.com/support

Current workaround
:

  1. Workaround:

    • Uninstall the January Windows KB update that corresponds to your system.: KB5050009, KB5050021, or KB5050009 update:

      1. Open Settings
      2. Select Windows Update
      3. Pause the Windows update
      4. Select Update history
      5. Select Uninstall updates
      6. Find the impacted update according to the operating system version used, labeled KB5050009, KB5050021, and KB5049981
      7. Select Uninstall
      8. Restart your computer
      9. Install the BIOS from dell.com/support using the executable file
      10. After a successful BIOS update go back to step c, to enable the Windows update
    • Update the BIOS from a USB stick using the computer pre-boot option
      1. Copy the executable file to external storage (USB flash drive)
      2. Keep the USB connected and restart the computer
      3. Press F12 to enter One-Time Boot Settings (reference Flashing the BIOS from the F12 One-Time Boot Menu)

We kindly ask you to test it and provide your feedback.

My error message simply says Failed to Install

I tried installing the 2.10.0 BIOS update using: 1) the web-based support app, 2) the Alienware Update app on my computer and 3) the executable file directly from my hard drive; all three failed. The executable file attempt ended with a "time out" sequence, so it seems the update executable is getting stuck in a loop. I'm on an Alienware Ryzen Edition computer running Windows 11.

Tried SupportAssist because alienware update is done from dell. Tried online from dell, came up with failed.

as slackeratwork said I got the same result Error:Driver Version Fail ! when mannually tried to install from

downloaded file from dell. running Aurora R10.

I reported this to Dell-Support through my channels. Please hang-tight.

At this point (with this many Aurora R10 users reporting the same) ... I would suggest not applying this one for now. Just use your computers like normal.

Me too - Aurora 10 - another pile of software dumped on us home self-trained software engineers to try and sort out, with hours of work trying to get it to work and it doesn't. It's only the BIOS - few things more exciting in life than potentially bricking your computer with badly written software.

Same for me. To work around it, I installed it from BIOS Update interface (my existing firmware was 2.9.1):

  • download Alienware_Aurora_Ryzen_Edition_2.10.0.exe from Dell drivers page and put it on an USB drive (I used a FAT32 one)
  • shutdown pc
  • turn on PC and keep pressing F12 until you get to the boot menu
  • select BIOS Flash update (or something like that) - it is around the end of the list so you may need to scroll down to see it
  • select the Alienware_Aurora_Ryzen_Edition_2.10.0.exe file from your flash drive and double click on it
  • start the update....after that the pc seemed frozen for around 30s but after that it rebooted and installed the update all right

I tried to install from 2.9.1 like lbertit but from file already downloaded on computer  Alienware_Aurora_Ryzen_Edition_2.10.0.exe but got "Error : Driver Version Fail !". Got the update this time via SupportAssist - it quickly started but then nothing happened for a while. After an hour (timer on SupAsst) came up with an error message. Downloaded again the Alienware_Aurora_Ryzen_Edition_2.10.0.exe checked the MD5# - correct, so put on USB like lbertit. If I remember correctly got to BIOS menu via F8 - you will need to look for BIOS Flash update (or something like that). Started the flash then red light on USB went out and the BIOS update page went dim. So waited & waited watched tv and waited. Went to bed. Woke about 02:30am screen still the same - nothing has happened after 8hrs. So it's broken again. Turned computer off and on again and fortunately it booted - I'm still on BIOS 2.9.1. Very like my miserable experience of Windows 11 24H2 which doesn't work - fortunately still on 23H2 which does. When you are told an update is"Critical" you like to get it done.

@Bell98

1. Downloaded again the Alienware_Aurora_Ryzen_Edition_2.10.0.exe checked the MD5# - correct,

2. So it's broken again. Turned computer off and on again and fortunately it booted - I'm still on BIOS 2.9.1.

1. Good. I was wondering if yall are actually checking CheckSums before using.

2. Sounds like it almost got Bricked/Killed. Glad you got it back this time.

Tried to update BIOS via the SupportAssist software, and its been stuck on installing for 15 mins now. Gonna let it do its thing, if it errors out. Don't want to force quit it in case something screws up.

This was an answer I found posted on another link to this problem so it looks like Dell is aware.

@DELL-Nat M Hello! Is Dell aware of the ongoing thermal overheating issue with BIOS 1.29 & 1.30 for Dell G15 5520/21 models?

@DELL-Nat M ok - there's an issue with the BIOS update 2.10. Could somebody take down the upload on Dell Support https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-uk/servicetag/*********** to stop the potential of someone bricking their computer.
