Issue Detecting MX5016s Disks with PERC H755MX on MX7000 Chassis and MX750c Blades

Hello everyone,

I'm experiencing an issue with detecting disks from the MX5016s storage module on a Dell EMC MX7000 chassis configured with:

  • An MX5000s I/O module.
  • Two MX750c blade servers with PERC H755MX controllers.

Problem Description:

  1. Internal disks on the blades are detected correctly using the command:

    racadm storage get pdisks

However, the disks from the MX5016s are not visible.

  2. The command to list enclosures only shows the internal enclosure:

    racadm storage get enclosures
    Enclosure.Internal.0-0:RAID.Integrated.1-1

    No mention of the MX5016s.

  3. I attempted to force a rescan with:

    racadm storage rescan

    Error received: Invalid command specified.

  4. The SAS ports are active, and the MX5000s module is in Passive mode.

  5. The PERC H755MX is in RAID mode, and I want to avoid losing the existing RAID configurations.

  6. The logs only show events related to internal disks with no errors concerning SAS or the MX5016s.

Harouna TARAM,

If your MX5016s storage sled is not being detected by the MX7000 chassis, it likely means there's an issue with the SAS switch configuration, the storage controller in your compute sleds, or a potential cabling problem. I would start with checking that the MX5016s is properly connected to the MX5000s SAS switch within the MX7000 chassis, and ensure the compute sleds have the necessary storage controller configured to access the MX5016s drives. I would also take the time to ensure that everything is up-to-date as well.

Let me know what you see.

Hi DELL-Chris H

Thank you very much for your help and suggestions.
I have checked the physical connections between the MX5016s and the MX5000s, and they seem correct.

However, I noticed that the expansion modules (SAS expanders) of the MX5016s are not detected by the chassis, which could explain why the blades cannot detect the drives, even though the drives are visible in OpenManage Enterprise (OME) of the chassis with the status “assigned”.

This makes me think that the problem might be due to a malfunction of the expansion modules or a potential issue with the SAS paths between the chassis and the blades.

Thanks again for your help!
