SC4020 reset Admin password
Hello,
I can not reset the "Admin" password of sc4020
I followed the following steps but I could not reset it
Tech Tip: Recovering a Locked Administrator Account in
Storage Center OS v6.5
If all accounts are inaccessible because they have been disabled or locked‐out, use this procedure to re‐
establish a local Administrator account and reset passwords.
Prerequisites
This procedure requires a USB device that contains a partition table with one partition formatted with an
MSDOS/FAT32 filesystem. USB devices vary by vendor as to whether they are formatted with or without
partitions. Use Windows disk management or other third‐party tools to create a partition if the USB device
does not have an MSDOS/FAT32 partition.
Steps
1 Create a text file containing the following line of text:
unlock
where is typically the Admin username. The Admin account is always on the system and it
has the required Administrator privileges to reset passwords.
2 Save the file and name it:
unlock.phy
3 Copy the file to a MSDOS/FAT32 formatted USB drive.
Note: Portable Volume is unavailable during the recovery process.
4 Insert the USB drive into a port on the lead controller. When the media is recognized, System Manager
allows the specified account to log on.
5 Log on to System Manager using the account specified on the USB drive. The password cannot be blank,
but any text entered will be ignored.
6 Unlock locked accounts.
7 Reset passwords on accounts.
8 Remove the USB drive from the port.
Can you help me to fix this issue?
Thanks

Hello @b.chiam,
Sadly there is not much we can add about it. You seem to being doing it correctly and still, it is not working. And you are following the documentation. So maybe you will need to contact support to have domebody connected remotely and help you with the process.
Regards.

Actually your SC4020 controller was not boot up. So reset admin password was not workable. you shold fix the issue first. Contact me if you need any help.

Hi Tianchou,
I have Dell SC4020 just acquired and I can't seem to login via serial console because the previous owner didn't reset the Admin password to default mmm.
Now, how can I reset the Admin password. I have done the unlock.phy thingy but seems not working. I tried both unlock and unlock Admin in the unlock.phy file.
Is there a CLI reference to reset the entire controller again without needing the Admin password?
I will really appreciate your help.

adding onto this thread for any future viewers. I have tried this unlock procedure a couple dozen times and with around 20 different USB's. I was finally able to get it to work but here are the caveats. You have to have a WORKING compellent system with managed disks in the system for it to work. you can not unlock a single controller like sc8000 by itself nor can you unlock a system without managed disks. You also must WAIT for the 2 1 finish screen after booting up. The compellent system will allow you access to LOGIN at the CLI before the user accounts have been setup, so you have to WAIT for it to finish booting before inserting the USB stick.

Units are running. i can access data on them from my VSphere.
But I Cannot login. User Admin
My 500Gb USB is formatted FAT32.
the file is saved as ",phy"
the file contains: "unlock Admin"
I have also tried with the file just having "unlock"
I have tried via the Serial port connection, the Monitor and keyboard connection and the WEB interface.
The Web page says Unisphere for SC Series. don't know if that makes a difference.
No I did not put Quotes in the file.
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG??
Thank you,
Martin

@MD81 honestly i would start with a smaller flash drive. the bigger it is the longer it will take to register.
-make sure you are in the right USB port
-make sure you are on the leader controller
-make sure the system is booted normally and there are managed drives in the system
the system should boot to normal 2 - 1 finish screen and when you plug the USB in you should see some console output
-make sure you are putting in anything but an empty string for the password
double check those items please.

So, I wonder if the procedure posted here is half baked and the link to the PDF procedure is no longer available...
This is what I did to reset the "Admin" password on a SC9000:
1. format a usb drive as FAT
2. create the unlock.phy file on the USB drive: unlock Admin
3. On the controller iDRAC open the console
4. Insert the USB drive on the "NON" leader controller
5. Wait for the recognition status to complete - DO NOT HIT "ENTER"
6. *Important, simply type: Admin and hit enter, type mmm as password
7. If you did it correctly, a prompt will appear - next steps at your own risk
8. Type: mc user user show
9. Identify the account ID, typically 1
10. Type: shellaccess developer
11. Type: mc user user passrst 1
12. At this point the password has been reset to: mmm
13. Log into the controller you inserted the USB drive using the default credentials: Admin / mmm
14. Change the "Admin" password
15. Reboot the "leader" controller
16. After Controller comes up, log into the cluster management IP with the password you just setup
17. You are all done.
Hope this may help some one, I had to reset the Admin account of our SC9000 because who knows why, all the accounts got locked, and after a few tries, I figured out that the USB needs to go on the non leader controller and you dont have to hit enter after the USB drive is recognized, otherwise the login prompt will appear and the recovery process will fail.
