How to Transfer Ownership of a Dell Product

Quick Summary: To transfer ownership of a Dell product, go to Warranty and Ownership Transfer.

What Is an Ownership Transfer?

When a Dell product changes hands, whether through a private sale, a gift, or a company reassignment, the warranty and service entitlement records need to be updated to reflect the new owner. This ensures the new owner can:

  • Access Dell technical support for the device.
  • Use warranty and service entitlements tied to the product.
  • Manage the product under their own Dell account.

Note: Transferring ownership does not extend or modify the original warranty. The warranty duration and terms remain tied to the original purchase date.

When You Might Need This

  • You purchased a used or refurbished Dell system from a third party.
  • You are gifting or donating a Dell device to someone else.
  • You are transferring a company-owned device to a new employee or organization.
  • You acquired a Dell product through a reseller, auction, or estate.

Before You Begin

Make sure you have the following ready before starting the transfer process:

What You Need
Where to Find It
Service Tag of the Dell device
Printed on a label on the device (commonly on the bottom or back panel), or retrieved through Dell SupportAssist. See How to Find Your Dell Service Tag.
New owner's contact information
Full name, email address, and shipping or mailing address.
Proof of purchase (if applicable)
Invoice, receipt, or bill of sale. Dell may request this depending on your region and product type.
A Dell account
You may need to sign in or create a free Dell account. Visit My Account to set one up.

How to Transfer Ownership

Step 1. Go to Dell Warranty and Ownership Transfer.

Step 2. Follow the on-screen steps to submit your transfer request using the information you gathered above.

Step 3. After submitting, wait for confirmation from Dell.

Tip: Once the transfer is processed, the new owner can verify the updated registration by entering the Service Tag at Dell Support and checking the warranty and ownership status.

For additional details about the transfer and registration process, see the Dell Ownership Transfer and Product Registration Guide.

Important Things to Know

  • Processing time is not instant. Allow several business days for the transfer to be reflected in Dell's systems. If the status does not update after an extended period, contact Dell support.

  • The warranty does not reset. The transfer updates who is listed as the registered owner. The warranty coverage, duration, and terms remain tied to the original purchase date.

  • Previous owner access. Once the transfer is complete, the previous owner will no longer be listed as the registered owner and may lose access to support and warranty services for that device.

  • Requirements may vary by region. The documents, forms, and steps required may differ depending on your country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I transfer ownership of any Dell product?
The process is generally available for Dell systems such as laptops, desktops, and servers. Availability for peripherals, monitors, and accessories may vary.

What if the Service Tag is missing or unreadable?
See How to Find Your Dell Service Tag for alternative methods, including using Dell SupportAssist or the BIOS.
