Dell R630 server bios update failing not sure what to do?

Hi all,

I purchased an older Dell R630, and it was fine for a while but had a failing CPU, so I wanted to update. I added some to the system that I checked were supposed by the hardware, but it seems that the Bios needs updating, and that is where it all falls over.

It's a PowerEdge r630
Bios is crruenty 1.3.5
firmware version 2.15.10.10
Lifecycle controller firmware 2.15.10.10

Hardware:
CPU 1 -  Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2680 v3 @ 2.50GHz.
DIMM A1/A2/A3 - DDR-4 X 16gb

From what I can tell, I'm getting the right bios; I'm uploading it from my Mac over the network, and it goes to the job, but then it fails.

I really don't know what steps to take to get this solved, its all new to me..

@DELL-Joey C

This is an update and info for anyone else in the same situation.

The R630 had no os on it, and was only running Unraid via USB.

1 - I downloaded and flashed ubuntu server
2 - Put the USB into the front panel, set the boot order to use the new USB and installed ubuntu server.
3 - I was then able to ssh into the machine and start the process of manually updating the bios versions one by one.
4 - If you hit an issue that bios update is installing but after reboot, you need to make sure that your Idrac/Lifecycle controller is updated to the most recent version.
5 - Then you can start adding them again, one at a time, and the system will cycle through the lifecycle install wizard for each one.

While painful doing it one at a time, this issue is now on the way to being solved, and getting to the most recent version.

Everyone, thanks for your assistance.

Hello thanks for choosing Dell and welcome to our community

This may help:

To update a Dell server's BIOS using iDRAC9, you can try these steps:
1 Download the update files from https://dell.to/3WN9DWu to your local machine
2 Log in to iDRAC
3 Click Maintenance, then System Update
4 Click Browse
5 Select the update file, then click Upload
6 Expand the update details to view the current and available versions
7 Select the update to install
8 For updates that don't require a reboot, select Install
9 For updates that do require a reboot, select Install and Reboot or Install Next Reboot
10 Open the job queue to monitor the progress of the update

Respectfully,

So, do exactly what I posted that I was doing, and getting the failure?

AS that is what I was doing
getting files
going into idrac, uploading them,
getting an error that it wasn't able to download , even though I had just uploaded.

BUT I didn't mention I was using idrac 8 though

Hi,

If you'e on iDRAC/LCC version 2.15.10.10, the iDRAC is not capable to use .exe file to update firmware.

My opinion to update the BIOS is via the OS DUP, and I don't recommend updating the BIOS straight from 1.3.5 to 2.19. Please try a lower version, say 2.0.1. I usually recommend users to update firmware in stages.
