How to show caps lock and num lock indicators for wireless multimedia keyboard & mouse

I have a wireless "Dell Enhanced Multimedia Keyboard", exactly as documented at I'm getting incredibly annoyed that I cannot get any driver and/or software that will display a caps lock and num lock indicator in the system tray.  It seems fairly obvious to me that there *ought* to be such a piece of software, and the documentation above refers to caps lock and num lock indicators that I can only conclude are provided by this mysterious piece of software, since there are no indicators on the keyboard itself.

Where can I get the software?  *Please* is there anyone reasonably competent at Dell who can answer this simple question for me?  I've exchanged at least 20 email messages with Dell customer support and it's gotten me nowhere!!!  I get answers like this, often several times since my support thread gets bumped to a new tech support person all the time:

  • There is no keyboard light to indicate caps lock and num lock status.  [DUH! That's why I'm asking for software that will do it.]
  • Use the CD that came with your machine.  [Sorry, it's lost.]
  • Download from support.dell.com.  [If it were available there, I would have gotten it a long time ago.]
  • Try the Logitech ITouch software.  [I downloaded version 2.22 from logitech, but it disables a few of the multimedia keys, and still does not provide any indicators in the system tray, only a brief onscreen message when you press caps lock or num lock.]

Please, please, please, please, please, can someone tell me where I can get this software for my keyboard?

Do a Google search with both these combined terms (use the quote marks) "caps lock" "system tray" and you will find several such utilities - some free, some shareware, some retail.

I will do that, but I'd still really like that software that is supposed to be made for my keyboard.  Why won't someone at Dell help me get this?

The documentation talks about LED 'icons', here:

You might think they just mean plain LED indicators like you'd find on most keyboards, but the picture of the keyboard shows pretty clearly that there aren't any such LED indicators:

I assume, therefore, that the LED 'icons' are software icons, provided by the software that is mentioned here:

I'd really like the software, and as you can tell, I'm more than a little frustrated that Dell won't put it on the support website along with all the other hardware related drivers and software that go with my system!

Thanks for trying to help, though ;-)

Paul Galbraith,

I'm sorry but I do not see anywhere on our site that documents any software or drivers that would do this.  Can you tell me you saw any reference to software that would display keyboard functions in the Systray and I'll see what I can find.

Hi Paul,

My keyboard problem did not begin like your problem, but the ending might be the same.

I once used a Dell by Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combination.  As delivered, the PC did display CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK icons in the Notification Area aka System Tray.  I then  upgraded the iTouch Logitech software used by the buttons on the keyboard.

With the original version 1.82 installed on my PC, the buttons would not work with Windows Media Player Series 9 (WMP9); instead pressing the play button would actually start MusicMatch Jukebox.  I upgraded to iTouch version 2.15 (available from Logitech).  That solved the "button problem" with WMP9.

But it caused another problem for me.  With v 2.15 of iTouch software, I lost the CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK icons in the Notification area in the bottom right portion of the screen.  This was important for me because my wireless keyboard did not have lights for CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK .

An initial email reply from Dell said that it was investigating the possibility of a patch. An email reply from Logitech said that it was a software change.  Instead of icons, new version used on screen notifications for CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK which I didn't like as much.

I eventually spoke with a representive from Dell Headquarters about a refund for just the keyboard and mouse.  He very politely told me that the PC worked with the original keyboard software as delivered.  Dell was not reponsible for delivering future patches to work with other software.

I eventually gave up.  I bought a replacement Microsoft wired Multimedia leyboard and Microsoft wired Intellimouse Explorer (v4).  I'm happy with both.  I hope you have better luck.

The icons are on the reciever on the end of the usb cable. The LEDs light up when you press Num Lock or Caps Lock. Just put it somewhere where you can see it.

Thanks!!!  I didn't even realize.  I've now moved the receiver close to my monitor, and I can now see the indicators.  Cheers,

Paul

Hey DEEPAT.  You are a winner!

Even Dell moderator or tech support did not know your simple solution!!

  Many thanks

The software from Dell didn't work for me.  I am running Win 7.  I resolved this problem using another program.

I have had the same issue.  Here is a FREE solution to resolve your issue.
