Hi guys... I have a doubt... my client wants to buy a DAS for some DVR storage (he has a software that manage the cameras and stuff) I'm quoting him a T5500 with a lot of goodies etc.
My question is: Can the PVMD 1000 could be attach to a workstation using Vista Business or XP pro? Or do it only connects to a server?
This is going to be a stand alone scenario, meaning that he only needs to connect that T5500 to the storage array and no one else needs to share those drives, do I need to quote him the PERC Controller?
What else do I need to quote him? cables, adapters etc.. !!
Ummm it seems I'm not going to be able to connect this to a workstation... what can you recommend? The DL2100? or is any other solution that could fit better?
I just need to connect a T5500 to a 10TB or more Disc Array for storage.
You started the tread talking about DAS. The MD1XXX series are for servers. The DL2100 isn't Direct Attach Storage -- among other things (i.e.backup/archive/dedupe), its primarily used for disk to disk backup.
That being said, if your requirement is to connect a large amount of disk to a workstation, then I think you have the following options:
1. Dell Third party storage offerings, like the Buffalo or Seagate models in this list:

2. Or go to a SAN (maybe iSCSI like the MD3000i or PS4000 ) or NAS route NX300 or AX/4. These methods will probably push the price point higher, but of course add value such as reliability and multiple connections from other systems.

The official support matrix can be found here:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/md1000/en/index.htm
Its very specific on the PowerEdge servers supported, PERC adapters, and associated OS requirements.
Definitely include either a 1M or 4M cable. 2 for Unified mode (Cabling diagram also in that support matrix pdf.)
Also, note the follow-ons to the MD1000, the MD1200 and 1220's are out with 6GB SAS:
