Inspiron 3891, both WiFi and ethernet connected, no Internet?

Good day,

My Inspiron 3891 (purchased in 2021) will not connect to the internet - wifi and ethernet same result.  Connects to the router, is secured, but NO INTERNET.  This started happening after my APC UPS battery backup failed.  It must have affected the PC in some way.  Tried a USB - WIFI and a USB Ethernet replacement, but they also CONNECT - NO INTERNET.  I have BIOS-DISABLED the internal WLAN, same result.  I have DEVICE MANAGER disabled the onboard com device in order to assure that the USB WIFI and ETHERNET units were being used, but still NO INTERNET?   I suspect some sort of issue on the motherboard.

I wonder if there is anyone in the Community who might have a helpful suggestion regarding this issue?

Hi

Try one, some, all or none of the following...

ping 127.0.0.1 & ping 13.107.4.52

ping 192.168.0.1 & ping 192.168.1.1

tracert 13.107.4.52 (if the ping works)

tracert to any ping that works

netsh interface ip show interface

netsh lan show interfaces | more /c

powershell Get-NetAdapter

ipconfig /all

I feel that if there is a hookup to the router, then the DEFAULT GateWay may need setting/adjusting.

If in doubt please ask.

@anne_droid - Hello again.  I started the dot3svc service and re-entered the NET LAN SHOW INTERFACES command.  Here is the result:

NETSH LAN SHOW INTERFACES:

There is 1 interface on the system:

Hi

You have an internet connection.

TRACERT 13.107.4.52:
====================
Tracing route to 13.107.4.52 over a maximum of 30 hops

  1     5 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  10.0.0.1
  ..................................................................
 11    28 ms    12 ms    12 ms  13.107.4.52

Trace complete.

HOWEVER...

For 10.0.0.1, the usual default subnet mask is 255.0.0.0, which is also written as /8.

Yours is 255.255.255.0 /24.

Not sure HOW2 explain HOW2 correct that, but that is an area of error.

If in doubt please ask.

You can see it may be possible to set manually your SubNet Mask to 255.0.0.0, along with the current gateway etc from your listing.

IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.25(Preferred)
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.0.0.0
     Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.1
   DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.1
   DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . :  24.201.245.77     24.200.243.189

@Elwy88  Did you try resetting your modem and router?

@bradthetechnut - I have reset every darn thing in the house.  :-)  -  I have 3 other PC's in the house all connected to the same network - working fine.  I compared a working PC's network status to the problem one - identical.  I carried the pc to a friends house and plugged in the ethernet and also connected to his wifi - the same problem existed there:  connected, no internet.   I suspect that this problem PC has a problem somewhere after the physical network infrastructure.  Something we can't get to without a soldering iron.  This problem started with a UPS POWER BACKUP unit failure.  I am thinking, now, that there was residual damage as a result of that failure.

@Elwy88  One can try reloading the OS.  Then you'll know if it's the software or PC that became corrupted.

I know you said you tried resetting everything, but did you try resetting BIOS, and beforehand, replace the size 2032 CMOS battery?  Try that before reloading OS.  PC was released in 2021.  Getting to be time for a new battery if not already.  Bad batteries affect BIOS and therefore PC operation.

Resetting BIOS is simple on the 3891.  With PC plugged into electrical outlet and with PC off, push and hold power button for 30 sec.

If all else fails, one can always get a new/refurb/used motherboard.  Probably fairly cheap on ebay.

Hopefully you're running all of the tests with PC plugged directly into a.c. outlet and not the failed UPS.

Hi

Debian or Linux Mint or Zorin for example.

If you can ping to an external source, like

ping bbc.co.uk

then you have an internet connection.
