Inspiron 3891, Event Viewer error - Usbupdate.exe fails
Hello, I completed a fresh restore/install of Windows 11 and keep seeing this error in the event viewer. Internet research suggests the UsBUpdate.exe originates from Dell. I have no new updates available in Windows update or Dell Update. Any advice?

I just ran Dell Update (9 June '22), successfully on my Inspiron 15, without it generating any USBieUPDATE errors in the reliability monitor.

The behavior of Supportassist for Home PC changed today. It does not start with a message, "We ran into an unexpected issue with SupporstAssist. Restart your PC and try again later." This time, the new USBIEUpdate is not on the Reliability Monitor. It just does not work.

I would recommend everybody to uninstall Dell SupportAssist until this is resolved and there is an official statement by Dell. Just to be on the safe side!

if you are worried about that, normally you can disable BIOSConnect in the BIOS, so that this remote updating is not possible.

This morning I found my computer unable to boot, stuck at the Dell logo and circling dots
“Invalid configuration information – please run SETUP program”
Everything was fine last night. I put PC into hibernation, and this morning it was there on the Dell screen. PC no longer boots. I don't think this is totally unrelated to what I read in this threat, and I did not do anything particular that could be linked to what's happening at the moment.
Last state of my PC was the UsbUpdate issues. I surely have a bigger issue now.

We have been told the the fix will be an automated update push through SupportAssist.

Chris, since it now appears to be working, and has been been for a couple of days, what fix from where, and when, do you refer to? Perhaps it has already been fixed? It is extremely difficult to determine when anything is fixed when you do not know what actually was broken. I do not use Support Assist, only Alienware Update (Universal). Your post seems to imply that whatever Dell is going to "push" can only be received thru Support Assist. How is the scan done during Support Assist different from the scan done by Alienware Update, or Dell Update?
Thanks.

Without noticing, it was updated the SupportAssist to 3.11.3.63. It seems like the problem was fixed.
Thanks Dell!

Chris,
Since this issue with dell update and support assist has not failed for me in many tries at re-creation, I suspect the issue was due to some problem with some third party code called by both dell update and support assist
Note that the reliability monitor did not show any updates for support assist or dell update prior to or during the time of these errors - so code in either app hadn't changed?

I have had 82 occurrences of USBIEUPDATE in 6 days. I deleted SuportAssist Wednesday evening and have not had any reoccurrences. However, in looking to see if Dell had a "fix" ready to download, I ran Dell Command / Update. In running this, I found that this definitely causes the USBIEUPDATE error. The timestamp in DC / Update is exactly the same as the timestamp in the Reliability Monitor so there could be more than one source causing the error. Please pass this along to L3 engineering.

Although I have not installed any Dell updates in several months, I rec'd the usbupdate msgs every day from 5/27 to 6/2. To temporarily resolve the problem until Dell fixes things, in windows (Win 10) services, I disabled Dell Digital Delivery Svc and SupportAssist Remediation and set Dell Client Mgt Svc to manual (if disabled, Dell Update program would not run at all). After 6/2, I did not receive the update msgs again until I manually ran Dell Update program on 6/6. Today when I ran Dell Update again, there have been no error msgs so far in reliability monitor. Maybe something was fixed in Dell's servers since 6/6.
I removed Dell SupportAssist program over a year ago; SupportAssist Remediation was left behind after the uninstall; I have let it be.

This issue cleared for me yesterday 9th June 2022. There have been no software or BIOS updates from Dell and when I run Dell Update or Dell SupportAssist, and then check the Reliability Monitor, there are no USBIEUpdate repeated 8 times as before.
A previous post suggested a certificate for the .exe concerned may have expired - if so, maybe Dell have renewed and hence the problem has vanished.
Interesting to see if others have also seen this problem vanish.

The UsbUpdate.exe error also appear to have stopped on my Insipron 5584, although I have no idea why. As far as can tell there have been no changes to the version numbers of SupportAssist, my BIOS firmware, or any of my other Dell utilities. Perhaps some new .sys driver or .dll library was uploaded that I'm not aware of.
I launched both SupportAssist and Dell Update on 08-Jun-2022 and ran checks for available updates, and both found one available update for a Realtek Memory Card Reader driver (which I did not install). My best guess is that after I launched SupportAssist that a new USBUpdate.exe file was uploaded (or some other change was made on my system) during the initial self-check when SupportAssist checks for an active internet connection and checks the back-end Dell servers for an available SupportAssist update. Unless Dell tells us exactly how we can confirm that the fix was pushed out (other than observing that the USBIEUpdate / UsbUpdate.exe errors have stopped being logged in Windows Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer) I'll likely never know how the problem was fixed.
The only information I could find about UsbUpdate.exe was an old System Explorer article at https://systemexplorer.net/file-database/file/usbupdate-exe that notes that UsbUpdate.exe used to be part of a Dell (Windows 7?) product called DriverIEUpdate.

Hmmmm. Just got an email from dell tech support saying that their product engineers just can't seem to find anything wrong with support assist or dell update. They thank me for fixing their use of broken third party code executed by both support assist and dell update. I sure didn't fix anything with it. Absolutely clueless. Not surprising though.

Congratulations! Not any more surprising than the same Dell Techs asking me what had failed with my Alienware Command Center after I posted about the Alienware Update. The world goes on................
