Dell 3593 display limited to 1080p so 4k monitor isn't optimized
on the thread Dell 3593 with nvidia mx230 - 4k not working was this:
internal documentation indicating that Inspiron xx93 systems, which would include this 3593, were limited to 1080p on HDMI.
Is there any new information on this @jphughan ?
Question can an external video card be added that would allow 4k? Or because any video output will be limited, nothing will be accomplished?
Thanks.

@dafsmith57 This limitation is officially written up in this KB article, so I wouldn't expect it to change. Dell also went back and removed the original references to HDMI 1.4b from the product pages and other documentation of those systems. In terms of workarounds, an external video card would make a difference since in that case you wouldn't be relying on the display outputs built into the system, but an external GPU is typically connected via Thunderbolt 3, which that system doesn't have. There are hack solutions that involve using an internal M.2 slot, but they're a bit of a mess. The only other option would be to use a USB dongle that relied on "indirect display" technology such as DisplayLink. I've seen single output dongles that support 4K up to 30 Hz and then docking stations that support up to dual 4K 60 Hz displays (haven't seen a single output 4K 60 Hz adapter, strangely), but DisplayLink comes with some drawbacks that I've written about in the post marked as the answer in this thread.
So unfortunately, the news isn't great. Sorry!

After some research, Dell got some more money from me: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/usb-30-to-displayport-adapter-4k-support-external-video-adapter-for-additional-displays-vt70-visiontek/apd/aa542648/pc-accessories
After downloading the software for the adapter there were a few "blank screen" issues so I restarted several times until Windows figured things out (that's a technical term). Thanks, @jphughan for heading me in the right direction.

Thanks for the links...One way to get 4k with more $ and another dongle!
Way to go Dell,
Cripple HDMI port to HD to sell 4K models and sell more USB to 4K display port or HDMI. Thing is customers paid for Intel Core i7-1065G7 IRIS PLUS with full supports of HDMI, DP of 4k at 60hz, and they don't have it. Shame!

@dafsmith57 Glad that dongle is working for you, but just for your awareness (and maybe that of others), that will only run 4K at 30 Hz, not 60 Hz.
@oanh3071 I have no insider info here, but I really don't think this was a conspiracy. The system was originally advertised as supporting HDMI 1.4b, and that was subsequently removed after this limitation came to light. I think somebody just messed up the design and/or manufacturing of this system in a way that couldn't be fixed in any economic way, so Dell just retroactively changed the specs to match reality rather than making the system perform according to its originally planned and advertised specs. Shady for sure, but I don't think it was premeditated.

Thanks for the information on the USB-HDMI dongle to get 4K at 30hz. It's hard to admit that having pretty decent Dell laptop with i7-10065G7 and resolutions are capped at 1920x1080. For the LCD, Yes, but not for HDMI. Telling us customers that their laptops in certain series don't support 4K on hdmi is a blow to DELL's reputation I would think.
In 2015 I had Dell Inspiron 660 Desktop with Core I5-3330 which spec'ed ONLY 8GB of SDRAM supports. And the Nvidia Geforce GT 520 supports only full HD. I throw it out and buy new PCI 3.0 video card and now I have 4K. But I say to myself why I have to be stuck with this...so I return video card and get an used HP elite desk 800 G2 with core i7-6700 built-in HD 530 graphics which support 4k, 60Hz on DP...That's that! Just as intel HD Specs.
During that time frame, I also bought Dell XPS 1421 laptop, which supports only 1440x900 on both LCD and HDMI.
In Dec 2020, I bought Dell 3593 laptop with i7-1065G7 which supports only HD on HDMI....My mistake didn't read full specs, but ...you know. I purchased 4K monitor on New Year just to find out the HDMI on laptop remains at 1920x1080. My last Dell...I think.
All I can say is

Reviving old thread. This is inaccurate for Inspiron 5593 w/ i5 -1035G1 w/ Intel UHD. Intel driver version 30.0.101.1404 allows 25560x1440x59hz 32bit color depth. I was surprised it worked. Dell website driver is 29.x series and doesn't allow more than 1920x1080. Latest Intel driver is 31.x and also doesn't work. I tried last 30.x driver which also didn't work. Intel driver version 30.0.101.1404 amazingly worked. Try it on your 3593 and see if it works.

Working in 3560 x 1440 on my Inspiron 3593 HDMI output thanks to old drivers (30.0.101.1660 - https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/19344/727284/intel-graphics-windows-dch-drivers.html)
The information is not on Dell website and seems not be known by Dell support that claims 1080 limitation is due to motherboard... what a shame !

Thank you guys. Driver version 30.0.101.1404 worked for me as well. Device: Dell Inspiron 5593.
