Dell Inspiron 15 5510 - Bent Lid / Broken Display - What should I do?

Hello Dell Community,

Yesterday, I was working on my family's laptop and discovered that the laptop lid was bent and with my knowledge of bent laptop lids this will cause bigger problems later on down the line. The laptop made a creaking noise when the lid was opened and closed. The display has also sustained some damage because of this. Could someone please provide me with solutions and options as well as if it is recommended to continue using the laptop in this state?

Worst case is probably that in addition to the screen, the hinges were also damaged.  If they're attached to the screen, they'll be replaced anyway.  If it goes deeper (damage to the mount to the base), additional parts may be required.

Without checking the system, no one can be sure.

The service manual has all the details on replacing internal components:

@ejn63 Thank you for sending me a link. I don't know how to install a new screen onto the system, but I do appreciate you taking the time to reply to me. I'd also like to know if it is a good idea to continue using the laptop with its bent lid and damaged screen or do I need to take action as soon as possible?

@ejn63 So the damage will start to become severe if not treated soon?

If you're having trouble opening or closing the system, the hinge will eventually snap.

@ejn63 Understood, thank you for giving me the information I need. Should I consider buying a new PC or is it worth trying to repair my current system?

Even with labor, you're probably looking at $200-250 total.  The system isn't all that old, and you can't come anywhere near a decent new system for that.

Once repairs cost upward of 50% of the cost of a new system, or the system is more than 4 years old, replacement makes more sense but it's your call.

Immediate Recommendations:

  • Stop using the laptop to avoid further damage.
  • Assess the extent of the damage to both the display and hinge.
  • Consider professional repair services for a thorough fix, especially if you're unsure about DIY repairs.
  • Backup important data as a precaution.
