Ethernet shows unidentified network

Hi , I am using dell inspiron 7586. Since there is no lan port i bought lan usb adapter TB-26L. I have installed all the necessary drivers with it but the ethernet is showing unidentified network. I tried troubleshooting but it shows not able to find valid ip config. Can someone tell me how this is going to work?

You could try opening a run box (Winkey+r) and entering ncpa.cpl the hit OK.  Go to the Ethernet adapter and right click and select disable.   Wait a few seconds and then select enable.  Hopefully, it will clear the problem.

If it doesn't, select status in the menu then details and see what your IP addresses look like.  Are they the same as you router address except for the last set of digits?  Are your Default Gateway and DHCP server the same?

Did you also setup your wireless connection? You should do that to establish the network. Open Network Connections to check settings.

I don't understand why you have to use ethernet on a laptop. That is the main purpose of having a laptop.

@Mary G, there's absolutely no requirement for someone to have an active WiFi connection in order to get a working wired connection, nor should it matter for the purposes of helping someone why they want Ethernet.  Maybe this person is in an area that has poor or no WiFi reception but has an Ethernet jack.  Maybe they want a faster connection for large file transfers or want to increase performance for other WiFi devices by keeping their laptop's traffic off the airwaves.  Laptops existed long before WiFi, and plenty of people even today use Ethernet with their laptops while they're docked or otherwise at a location where their laptop spends significant time plugged into other external peripherals anyway, so claiming that WiFi is the main purpose of having a laptop makes no sense.

It seems your system isn't getting an IP via DHCP from your network, and without that info it can't identify the network, which is why Windows is saying "Unidentified network".  Try rebooting your router and/or replacing the Ethernet cable.  If that doesn't resolve the issue, can you try connecting another device to that cable and that same port on your router to see if it gets a connection?  If it does, it could be an issue with your adapter.

I am actually in college where there is a lan cable in every room providing a faster speed than the wireless network. There is no problem with the wireless network. Its just with the ethernet.

Do you have access to another PC that can test your adapter with?  If the adapter doesn't work on the other PC either, it's probably an issue with the adapter.  Fortunately Gigabit Ethernet to USB 3.0 adapters are inexpensive and widely available, so getting another one shouldn't be difficult.

Do you have anyone else you know is using the LAN cable and if so, could you compare their configuration.  I would assume the DHCP server would be assigned automatically, but you could see what theirs was and try inputting manual settings.

Does anyone else use the same physical connection with a different computer?
