Inspiron 15 5559, what’s with the front light?

I have a (borrowed) Dell Inspiron #5559 laptop, and suddenly the little ¼-inch front light on the left side of the base is making itself known.  It generally goes on briefly when I turn on the laptop, but because of where its position, I don’t much notice it after that.

But last month I suddenly noticed that it was blinking orange.  I waited, but no problem made itself known.  Then the other day the white light was on, and stayed on, for no apparent reason.  Now last night the white light was blinking.  At one point it was stuttering.

But no indication of what it’s indicating!

Any ideas?
