There was a thread already on this issue, hence I called this one V2. The previous was closed recently as an accepted response was Dell replacing the touchpad, just a few days after that post.
Well I am on my second replacement touchpad (3rd touchpad now including the original), plus a new touchpad cable, plus a new fingerprint scanner cable and power switch. Mine originally worked for around 3 months, the first replacement worked for a few weeks, the last replacement for a day or two. We have tried all the usuall stuff of bios updates, windows updates, Dell remote investigation, touchpad driver updates etc. Awaiting our next appointment in 6 weeks when we return to a major town for it to be looked at for the third time.
However now not only is the touchpad still intermitently erratic, now the fingerprint scanner doesnt work at all (isnt recognised in Device Manager), power switch works intermittently, and the screen turns completely black randomly with only recourse to close the lid and reopen, then i works for a few seconds to a few days.
I bought this Dell for work during our full time travels around Australia as previous experience with Dell had always been good. Not so fun in the middle of the outback when the touch pad fails and you dont have a mouse with you!!
So the issue is not solved by replacing the touchpad, there is definitely something much deeper causing the issue. Has anyone had success yet? None of the many threads on this topic ever have a resolution at the end, everyone just dissapears.
Update (Jan 2024): Unit went in for repair to Dell, came back all working perfectly, less than a week later touchpad failure again. Now awaiting a replacement as this model is end of life and the next model was end of life... Awaiting the 2024 version. (was offered a non touchscreen version - useless to me)
Update 2 (May 2024): Replacement new model just arrived (7640 2in1, only 2k screen and not 4k), brand new model just released, camera is not compatible with Windows Hello Facial Recognition.. Apparently needs an IR camera, the old laptop from 2 models ago was, this one is not. Will be interesting to see if the touch pad issue is resolved.
The Inspiron 16 7620 2-in-1 is a relatively new laptop, but there have been some reports of touchpad issues. These issues can include:
Touchpad not responding
Cursor jumping or erratic movement
Difficulty clicking or dragging
Touchpad gestures not working
If you are experiencing any of these issues with your Inspiron 16 7620 2-in-1 touchpad, there are a few things you can try:
Update your touchpad drivers. You can download the latest touchpad drivers from the Dell website.
Restart your computer. This can often fix minor software glitches.
Boot into Safe Mode. If your touchpad works in Safe Mode, then the problem is likely caused by a third-party software program. Try disabling or uninstalling any recently installed programs to see if that resolves the issue.
Run the Dell Diagnostics Tool. This tool can help to identify and fix hardware problems.
Reset your BIOS settings. This can sometimes fix touchpad issues caused by incorrect BIOS settings.
Contact Dell support. If you have tried all of the above steps and the problem persists, contact Dell support for further assistance.
In some cases, the touchpad problem may be caused by a hardware defect. If this is the case, the touchpad will need to be replaced. Dell can provide you with a replacement touchpad under warranty.
Here are some additional tips:
Make sure that your touchpad is clean and dry. Dirt or moisture on the touchpad can cause problems.
Avoid using the touchpad while you are eating or drinking. Food or drink spills can damage the touchpad.
If you are using an external mouse, disable the touchpad. This can help to prevent conflicts between the two devices.
Bought mine in 2022. Fixed the touchpad by installing a grounding wire between the touchpad copper pads and a nearby screw that showed zero ohms to power ground. Haven't had a problem since. It is definitely a design problem. The design grounding setup shows a 1 ohm resistance to power ground. The result is static buildup on the touchpad and random, erratic behavior. Replacing the touchpad won't solve the grounding issue and it's not a software problem. Do the fix yourself or have a technician do it for you. Since I installed the grounding wire, my Dell 7620 has been great.
@anyabaker Thanks for the tips, all of those have been tried already. And relatively new compared to what? It was launced January 2022, meaning its almost 2 years, and the earlier 7610 model had the same issues. It's definitely not a new issue, proven by the 4 commonly reported issues you mention!
Since mine has already had the touchpad replaced twice to no avail and there seems to be quite a few in a similar position, I was hoping someone had already had a permanent fix that didn't involve a non-factory modification (the soldering of a ground wire to the touch pad).
I am awaiting arrival to my next major city destination in a couple of weeks to see what next will be tried. It's difficult when travelling full time!
I've been having a very similar issue with my trackpad for about a week, cursor jumping erratic, randomly touch clicking on everything, trackpad not responding at all, etc. Initially thought it might be a virus, but none detected. Then read this thread and was pretty disheartened with my brand new Inspiron 16 7620 2-in-1. Took a video of the problem as suggested in another thread, then called up Dell support. Technician remotely updated a bunch of drivers and bios. To my surprise, after rebooting, the problem seems to have been resolved. Will keep monitoring if the issue returns, but am feeling pretty happy for now with the excellent Dell support.
@DanRan Sorry to hear you have the same issue. After the Bios updates mine worked for a week or so then started playing up again. I have now had the touchpad assembly replasced twice, just on the chat to Dell service as I type this, orgainsing this time for it to be sent back to Dell Service centre for a thorough going over for up to 10 days - and then theres Christmas in the middle and I am on the road and moving on the 27th.. As its my work computer I am not overly impressed, but then I don't a lot of choice :( Good luck with yours, but so far I havent actually read of anyone having it fixed!
UPDATE. Arrived at the next major city and was advised this time it had to be sent in to the Dell Service Centre for official Dell techs to fix it.
First two onsite repairs it had the touch pad replaced 1st repair, touch pad & connector ribbon and power switch / fingerprint scanner replaced second repair.
This time at the Dell Service Centre it had the mother board, finger print sensor/power sitch, IO board and display replaced, along with a new install of Windows wiping out all my programs and data. The ony original parts are the keyboard, outer casing, memory, hard drive and battery.
Erratic touchpad just came back 15 days after receiving from the last repair (5 working days). ..... Not promising..
Same problem here, 2022 INSPIRON 14 2in1. It just started happening, run through all the software troubleshooting and nothing. Of course, I'm out of luck on the warranty.
I noticed today that I can make the touchpad "click" by pressing on the bottom of the laptop in different areas, so it's definitely a hardware issue, at least on mine. I will try the grounding hack
After waiting a week for a decision on whether to replace (was told 24 to 48 hours and I had to hound them twice) was asked if I had updated the touch pad drivers since the repair... All drivers and updates were run the day before it failed, but no, hd to go through a remote session to update the touchpad driver, again. Whenever the chat expires and you get a new support person they go back to the beginning.
Last time, if it fails again I will be demanding a replacement, had enough - this is used for my work (wife says I am too lenient)
EDIT.. Well that didnt last long - failed again already.
