SSD Installation

The only way to upgrade to an SSD is to replace the hard drive with a 2.5" SATA SSD. 

There is no support in this system for an M.2 drive.

Dell Inspiron 3583 owner here. This model does have a M.2 slot that can accept a 2280 NVMe SSD. You may have to remove the optional Intel Optane memory module from the M.2 slot in order to install the SSD. Remember to remove the hard drive in order to configure the system to boot from the NVMe SSD before reinstalling the OS or after cloning the existing hard drive. Afterwards, you can reinstall the hard drive and repurpose it for additional storage.

Yes, there is a slot to insert an SSD in the Dell Inspiron 3583. It supports an M.2 NVMe SSD. You can upgrade the existing SSD or add a second one if there's an empty slot.

@Kflash08​ I have ann inspiron 3583 as well, and was wondering if I can actually put an SSD in the M.2 slot or whether it is only for intel optane memory. If I can put an SSD in there to use as my main method of storage, is there anything I need to do to change the M.2 slot beforehand, or any settings I need to change etc.

@aidn84​ Yes, you can install a NVMe drive. If you have an Intel Optane module installed, you will have to disable it through the Intel Optane Memory & Storage Management app before physically removing it. After installing the NVMe drive, you will need to temporarily disconnect the 2.5" drive before powering up the computer, so that the BIOS can re-configure itself to use the NVMe drive as the primary boot device. Afterwards, you can re-connect the 2.5" drive and re-purpose it for additional storage.
