Troubleshooting Laptop Keyboard Issues

If your laptop keyboard is not working, follow these steps to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue:

  1. Restart the Computer: Save any data, close open programs, and restart your laptop.
  2. Check for Physical Issues:

    • If a specific key is not working or is sticking, turn off the laptop and use a can of compressed air to clean around the affected key.
  3. Test in Different Applications:

    • If the keyboard issue occurs in a specific application, test the keyboard in another program, such as Notepad, to determine if the problem is application-specific.
  4. Update BIOS:

    • Ensure that the BIOS is updated to the latest version. Refer to the Dell article on BIOS updates for guidance.
  5. Check Keyboard Settings:

    • Ensure that the Number Lock Key is set correctly, as it can affect the numeric keypad functionality.
  6. Run Diagnostics:

    • Use the online or integrated diagnostics to test the keyboard. This can help identify if the keyboard is detected at a hardware level.
  7. Check for Software Conflicts:

    • Uninstall or disable any software that may interfere with keyboard operation, such as keyboard macro programs or external gaming keyboard software.
  8. Try Another Keyboard:

    • If available, connect another wired USB, wireless USB, or Bluetooth keyboard to see if it responds correctly.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, consider contacting Dell support for further assistance.

To receive assistance from Dell chat support, they need to verify the warranty status and ownership. Then you must troubleshoot with them.  Click the "Get Help Now" icon on the right to start a live chat session. If already out of warranty, click here for the Dell out of warranty offering.

Just received some information from our engineer on this issue. You will need to install the touchpad drivers again, it’s an issue with Windows update. Customers can also try to uncheck fast start up
