EMC Isilon x400 to x410 migration
Hi All,
I am running a project to replace existing Isilon 10 x X400 nodes with 7 x X410 nodes (Adding extra 84TB and saving 12U rack space) on both our Isilons.
I am aware I need to add each X410 node into the existing cluster and create a new X410 smart pool with +2d:1n protection.
What is the process to remove each X400 node out of the existing cluster to ensure a successful migration?
Some guidance and direction on how to complete would be great? If you could point me in the direction of X Series node migrations that would be even better?

Hello, Jonathan, It's actually a pretty well-documented procedure. In general, it looks like this:
1. First you'll swap out the back end switches if necessary to get enough port density to accommodate all the nodes at once, using hybrid cables if necessary to connect to older nodes.
2. Now add all the new nodes, physically and logically to the cluster.
3. Connect up their front-end ports to the network, placing their interfaces in the corresponding SmartConnect zones to eventually take-over for what the old nodes are doing.
4. Now you'll change the default file-pool policy and then run a SmartPools job, which will start draining the old node pool an d moving the data to the new one.
5. Once this is done, you'll suspend the interfaces from the old nodes in each smartconnect pool. This won't change currently connected users, only it'll stop handing out those IPs for the old nodes, so that the number of connections per node will die down through reboots / disconnects reconnects of clients.
6. Now you'll start smart-failing out the old nodes. You'll do the one with lowest NodeID dead last. Why? Because it hosts the SmartConnect Service IP, and every time that moves it causes a momentary group merge event, where an election is held to determine which node now owns the service and starts it up. 'isi config -> status advanced' will get you the details of the nodeIDs, which can differ from the LNN numbers.

Thank you for the information regarding the migration. I am new Isilon so have been unable to locate these procedures, so again i appreciate you providing me this detail.
Are you able to point me in the direction of the relevant documentation?

As a Dell EMC Employee, partner, or customer you should have access to download and install 'solve desktop'. It is a procedure generator that should contain this information. Link below: (Though it's Windows only.
)
