Fix Repeated Windows Device Connect/Disconnect Sounds When Using Multiple Monitors and a Docking Station

Some Dell laptop and docking station configurations may generate repeated Windows device connect/disconnect notifications when multiple external displays are connected. The behavior is most commonly observed when the system is locked, idle, asleep, or when connected displays transition into a power-saving state.

Error Indicators

  • Repeated Windows hardware connect/disconnect notification sounds.
  • Sounds occur only when connected through a docking station.
  • More common when two or more external displays are attached.
  • Issue may begin after graphics driver or system updates.
  • Event Viewer may show display, USB, Thunderbolt, or Plug-and-Play re-enumeration events.

Possible Causes

  • Graphics driver behavior during display power-state transitions.
  • Docking station or monitor re-enumeration when displays enter sleep mode.
  • Interactions between external displays, USB peripherals, and dock firmware.
  • Driver, firmware, or software interactions within specific hardware and display configurations.

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Update the Intel Graphics Driver

Dell has identified graphics driver updates as part of ongoing improvements to display and docking station behavior. Systems experiencing this issue should install the latest Dell-approved Intel Graphics Driver available for their model. A specific driver release was previously reported to improve the behavior on affected systems, but newer versions may now be available.

  1. Go to Dell Support and identify your system.
  2. Install the latest Intel Graphics Driver available for your model.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Verify whether the notification sounds stop.

Note: Driver version availability varies by system model. Always install the most recent Dell-recommended graphics driver listed on the support page for your device.

2. Update BIOS and Dock Firmware

  1. Install the latest BIOS update.
  2. Update docking station firmware.
  3. Install current chipset, Thunderbolt, USB, and graphics drivers.
  4. Restart the system after updates.

3. Test Display Sleep Settings

As a diagnostic step, temporarily configure connected displays to remain active and test whether the behavior stops when monitors do not enter sleep mode. This may help determine whether display power-state transitions are contributing to the behavior.

4. Disconnect Non-Essential Peripherals

Remove USB accessories connected through monitors or the dock and test again. Reconnect devices individually to identify whether a specific peripheral contributes to the behavior.

5. Review Event Viewer

Check Windows Event Viewer > System logs for recurring graphics, Thunderbolt, USB, or Plug-and-Play events that coincide with the notification sounds.

6. Contact Dell Technical Support

If the behavior persists after completing the steps above, collect the system model, dock model, monitor configuration, BIOS version, and driver versions before contacting Dell Technical Support.

Additional Notes

  • The sound is typically the standard Windows hardware connect/disconnect notification rather than a hardware diagnostic beep.
  • Keeping BIOS, dock firmware, and graphics drivers up to date helps maintain compatibility with external displays and docking solutions.
