Dell 7490 with Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS never wakes up after sleep
I recently have had tremendous problems with my Dell Laptop running Ubuntu. When the screen turns black after being idle for some time (5 min I think) I won't turn back on when I try to wake it (by toughing the keyboard or touchpad), ending up in that I need to hold down the power button until it dies so I can start it again. There are no led lights flashing (I mention this because I've read similar posts where others seems to have a similar problem but with flashing led lights).
However, there is no problem if I manually locking the screen (so that it turns black). Also no problem if I manually suspend it.
I have both Ubuntu and Windows 10 installed. I have tried to reproduce the problem in Windows but never succeeded. So there seems to be a Ubuntu related problem with this computer.
I summarize some details below:
Laptop: Dell Latitude 7490
Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS
Updated BIOS to version: 1.15.1
Please assist me! This laptop isn't even 2 years old, and it ought to be a high end computer.

Dell support couldn't help me. I have also tried EVERYTHING, reading every single post regarding similar problems, tried with different Linux distros (Ubuntu, Mint and Fedora). Nothing works and I'm stuck with Linux installation that crashes 20 times a day.
If you want to use Linux, don't buy a Dell laptop.

I have the same problem with Dell Inspiron 3593. It doesn't wake up in ubuntu 20.04.1, 20.04
I alredy tried to change desktop enviroment (Unity, Cinnamon), change NVIDIA driver, etc. It doesn't work. What should I do?

I have also had problems since day one with my Dell Precision 7540 that came with Ubuntu 18.04
It had wake-up-from-sleep problems from DAY ONE when it shipped, I stuck with it just because of sunk cost fallacy
I called tech support instantly
I shipped it to their manufacturing center where they reinstalled ubuntu
Still had problem
I manually upgraded the bios myself to latest version, thought it helped, but did not
Now fails to wake from sleep more than 50% of the time
Really bad experience with this, I literally have learned to live with the fact that anything I do needs to result in total system shutdown instead of relying on any ability to restore system waking from sleep

Me too.
I got a Dell laptop preinstalled with Ubuntu 18.04. After a do-release-upgrade to 20.04, and adding KDE, the only problem I noticed with it was that it was "dead" from time to time, when I had left it for some hours. Just like you described in your original post.
The exception for me was that it took somewhere between a couple of hours to maybe a day or two, before it happened.
After the first few times I experienced this I started to check that the laptop was still alive. Normally when I touched the keyboard or mouse the KDE log-in screen appeared. Then "suddenly" nothing happened. The only response I could see, was that pushing the F5 key woke the keyboard back-lighting.
If this "lock-up" happened, the only solution I have found for now, is to hold down the power button on the laptop or the dock, for 10 seconds, and start it again. I have a WD19TB dock, and the power button on this has a little light on it. This light goes out after 10 seconds after the power button is hold down for 10 seconds.
I have also updated my BIOS and WD19TB dock, with the newest firmware from Dell.com. No change in behavior.
Laptop: Dell Latitude 5310
Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS
Updated BIOS to version: 1.3.0
Graphic card: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics
The only significant change I have done to the original setup from Dell, is that I have create a seperate swap partition, and change in fstab to use this instead of a file under /.
Anyone that can help with a solution?

This happened with me but I have win 10. I don't know if this works for you. I think the power option has something to do with this. It shuts down power of hard drive.
Try ti disable hard drive sleep.
Solved for me.

Thanks for the tip, @Henngel.
Sorry it took some time to respond. I waited for the next time the machine freeze, before I tested to change things in the BIOS. I cold not find a option for "hard drive sleep", but I changed the value "Block Sleep", to enable. Still have problems.
Tested also another tip, so disabled C-States also. The machine still freezes, from time to time.

I meant that you change it for the system not bios. Try advanced power option, hard dirve.

Hi @Henngel
Right after reciving your message, I experienced that the machine also froze up while I was working on it. I was looking into how I could change the settings in KDE's control panels, but I can't find anything that resamples "advanced power option" for the hard drive.
But then again, if the machine froze up, while I was actively working on it, it gives me a hint that it might not be the sleeping option that is cousin it.
I patched the machine with the last updates, and added a scheduled dmesg dump, to see if I could see anything of interest the next time this happens.... But VOILA... It has now gone a week without the machine frezed up.
Not sure what has fixed it. Maybe the last update (that had a new kernel), maybe some of the BIOS changes needed more than a couple of boots to take effect (sounds strange...), or maybe some combination.
I'm holding my breath, but I'm now hoping the problem is gone, for good. Thank you for your tips.

@Jemtland great to know that someone has this bloody problem 'fixed' (or it fixed itself?). Can you give more details about which distro are you on? Is it also Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS? And by the way, your last message waas from Jan 18th, today is Jan 28th - has the problem occurred again the the past 10 days?

I successfully solved the problem by removing the swap memory.
Try this :
sudo swapoff /swapfile
Then restart
Now it wakes back from sleep peacefully. This also worked for a HP laptop.
But without the swap memory, system could freeze when it run out of RAM. There's something wrong with ACPI but I can't figure it out.
Any expert advise?

Thank you Hasindu.
I still have this lockups from time to time (less than once a week), so I'll try this out to see if it helps.

I have had the same issue on several 7490
Tried several resolution like the nomodeset in grub config. then tried to upgrade to latest kernel but still all of the 7490 continued to freeze.
( I did not try yet the swap setting)
However, on all of those 7490, debian bullseye installation ( with non free firmware) works perfectly .
