Dell Latitude 5480 intermittent startup issue – Laptop only starts after warming up
Hello everyone,
I am experiencing an unusual startup issue with my Dell Latitude 5480, and I would appreciate any advice from Dell experts or anyone who has experienced a similar problem.
Laptop Specifications
- Model: Dell Latitude 5480
- Processor: Intel Core i5-6440HQ
- RAM: 8 GB DDR4
- Storage: 256 GB SATA SSD
- Operating System: Windows 10 Pro (fresh installation)
- BIOS: Updated to the latest version through Windows Update
Problem Description
My laptop has an intermittent startup problem.
Sometimes:
- Pressing the power button does nothing.
- Sometimes only the power button LED turns on.
- Sometimes the power LED turns on for about 2–3 seconds and then the laptop powers off.
- Occasionally it starts after several attempts.
The most unusual symptom is that if I leave the laptop in direct sunlight for a few minutes, it starts normally and then works perfectly for the rest of the day.
If I shut it down and leave it overnight, the same problem usually returns the next morning.
Troubleshooting Already Performed
I have already tried the following:
- Fresh installation of Windows 10.
- BIOS updated to the latest version.
- Dell ePSA diagnostics.
- Complete internal cleaning and servicing.
- RAM removed, cleaned, and reinstalled.
- Laptop inspected by multiple repair shops.
- Windows and drivers fully updated.
Despite all of these steps, the problem still occurs intermittently.
My Question
Has anyone experienced this issue with a Dell Latitude 5480?
Could this be related to:
- Motherboard power circuitry?
- Power management IC?
- Cracked solder joint?
- RAM slot or memory issue?
- Another hardware component?
The laptop works perfectly once it starts. The issue only occurs during startup after it has been powered off for some time.
Any suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

It's likely a bad or weak cold solder joint on the mainboard -- given the age of the system, it's unlikely to be worth replacing the board at this point. Compare the cost of a newer system to the cost of a mainboard.

The reason I suspected a hardware issue is that the laptop often starts normally after I leave it in the sun for a few minutes, and then it works perfectly for the rest of the day.
Do you think this symptom strongly indicates a cold solder joint or another motherboard power issue? Is there any way to confirm it before replacing the motherboard?

There's no real way to find a bad solder point -- but this system is worth $50-100 at most, so bear in mind that it'll likely be cheaper to replace it than repair it.
Used 5480s are in that price range on EBay -- and you can probably find one 2-3 years newer for not much more money.
