The system also needs a WWAN card to connect to a PCS network -- which in turn requires antenna leads inside the system. Open the system and verify that the leads are present (they're usually not if the system came without a WWAN card from the factory). If the antenna leads are there, you'll need a WWAN card compatible with your service provider's network.
If the antenna leads are absent, retrofitting them requires replacing the display assembly, so it can get expensive. A USB WWAN adapter may be a better solution.

The SIM slot (and card) by itself is unusable. You need a WWAN card that's compatible with your provider's network -- and before buying one, be sure the system has the antenna wiring inside. If it doesn't, you will also need to replace the display assembly.
