Windows license key
Latitude E6510
Hello everyone,
I've done a lot of research and I couldn't find the answer. I have a really old Latitude E6510 laptop and I know it has reached end of life a long time ago but my question is this. I've formatted the device but it doesn't read any windows license key off of the motherboard. There are no stickers on the laptop and obviously I don't have any boxes or anything. I've tried windows 7 through 11 and nothing it doesn't detect it. I tried getting it through CMD but it kept saying wmic command not found and tbh I didn't bother enabling the wmic feature since windows doesn't recognise any keys anyway.
When I check partitioning it seems that there is an OEM recovery but I can't boot from it for some reason (I've tried pressing F8 and nothing happens except the bios peeping).
So the question is, how do I find the key or how do I get windows to read it?

The system probably shipped with Windows 7, and would have had an OEM sticker on it when it did, unless it was ordered by a company or institution without an OS.
Embedded license keys really started with Windows 8.
Any Windows recovery utility is likely long gone (or the drive has been replaced).
With Windows 10 reaching end of life this year, if you want to keep the system operational, your best bet is likely one version of Linux or another.

@ejn63 I don't really care much for the windows end of life since this laptop is just a secondary one for messing around. I think all the stickers are there, including the tag, except the windows one. I will try to update it to win10 then boot to recovery and see if that'll get me somewhere. I'm almost certain license keys got linked to your Microsoft account after win8 yes but before that it would just be embedded into the motherboard.

No, it's with Windows 8 that the license key began to be embedded on system boards where systems were purchased with Windows.
Windows 7 systems shipped with a sticker (often under the battery) that had the license key on it. If your system did not, you may be able to purchase a Dell OEM install DVD -- that should install without the need for a license key. You do still see these being sold on Ebay, etc.

grab this tool "SLIC_ToolKit_V3.2.EXE" to check if SLIC 2.1 is installed to your E6510 BIOS.
If no SLIC shows up, your device has been shipped w/o Windows and FreeDOS or a Linux Distro was originally installed.
If so, you can use the DELL Windows 7 OEM key to install W7 to your E6510.
Doing so, W7 will be automatically activated and need no online activation!
If you dont have a DELL OEM W7 ISO, install any other W7 pro ISO to the E6510 and enter these commands from an administrative command prompt:
slmgr.vbs -ilc c:\temp\DELL-DELL-2.0.xrm-ms
slmgr.vbs -ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
