XPS 13-9370, Linux will not install?

Hello everybody,

I recently bought a Dell XPS 13-9370 for my son, with the idea of installing Linux (needed for his courses of Physics) aside the pre-installed Windows.

I shrank without any problems the Windows partition and created a partition for Linux. Following the almost standard procedures, I made a bootable USB to launch the Linux installation, and here came the problems:

Even though the PC has 16 GB RAM, the Linux installation stops with the error message that the Linux installer only detects 8 GB RAM, not enough for concluding the installation.

I tried more than 10 Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Mint, OpenSUSE, Arch and others: always the same result, no way, the installer “sees” 8 GB only.

I also upgraded the BIOS to the latest versions a few times, nothing to do.

Do you have any idea why this can happen? I’m really frustrated, I have no clue why for some reasons the PC RAM appears to the Linux installer made of 8 GB instead of 16 GB.

Thank you very much for any help!

Ubuntu Installation guide says it only requires 2GiB of RAM for installation.

I'd recommend going to the Ubuntu site and getting the LiveCD for a minimal install. You will need an internet connection. The problem might lie in the LiveCD loading the entire image into memory, but i can't see that being a problem.

If you could post the exact error message given by the Installer (and more information about the system and OS being installed) it might be easier to figure out the problem.

I've installed Arch and Ubuntu on systems with less than 8GiB RAM, so I don't understand why it's giving you such a hard time.
