Problems with Alienware X51 R2

Hello everyone.

I had my Alienware for 1 year now. 2 times I requested help from the support technicians for the following reasons:

PC reboots constantly with no specific reason. I might be playing or simply using Word.

-When the PC reboots could happen one of three:

  1. The PC started like usual. No apparent problems.
  2. The PC reboots like if the video card wasn't plugged in. Only solution is to restart.
  3. The screens would show a message to "Shut down and connect the PCIe cables"

The first time I called Dell, they changed the Motherboard and the Video Card (NVIDIA 670). The second time they changed the Video Card (NVIDIA 670), Motherboard, 2 4GB RAM Cards and the PSU.

Now my warranty has endended but the problems reappear.

AlienAutopsy says that this errors are caused by Blue Screens.

I've runned all Alien Autopsy tests and no problems appear. The ePSA has found 0 hardware problems. I've installed the drivers in the resource CD, the ones that Microsoft Update downloads and the newest by Nvidia Geforce Experience or the oficcial website. Any video driver I chose, causes the same problems.

I'm really tired, and I think that I regret the day when I buyed my desktop.

I'm sorry to tell you that that's the description I've got from the Dell guy. I can tell you, that is a card just below the DVD player. It's not very big and has a little fan on it. I've checked also the receipts looking for the description of the part replaced and there isn't one.

Sorry.

Do you know what the error code of the Blue screen is? As well you can try to reset the video card that might help? I will recommend you to test the system with both video card drivers the one in the Nvidia website and the one of the Dell support site.

Both drivers still make my system crash. I already reseted it with no results. The error code is always 0x0000016 it says that nvlddmkm.sys appears to have caused a system crash.

I also wanted to add that when this happens, the PC can also reboot very slowly and the sound also sound corrupted (slow)

There might be a problem with the video card however the last troubleshoot step that you can try before replacing it is reinstalling windows.

Well... Dell already replaced 2 times, I would make a difference to replace it a third time?

I formate my PC and installed W8. The problem its still there. But now Alien Autopsy doesn't say that the problem was because of the graphics card. It just says that an unexpected shutdown ocurred. I'am going to start using the PC without the gpu.

Could it be a problem of energy, or overheat?

I don’t think is overheating but it will be good if you check the temperature of both video card and processor.

If after this clean install if the issue persists pretty much you are facing a video card problem though let us know how it goes when you use the system without the GPU.

The system had 0 problems without the gpu.

I decided to plug in the GPU and I found that the system was working correcly, I could use the PC at full capacity for a day until it crashed again. Inmediatly I took out the gpu and plug it in again, and it happened the same thing, the system worked correctly for a full day.

Edit: Since the last time I plugged in the gpu There hasn't been any problems until 5 days (Sep 20). I took out again the gpu and put it again.

I have a x51-R2 with i7-4770 & GTX760 Ti.

Same exact problem as you. EXACTLY.

GTX760 Ti has been replaced & the PSU.

Same problem still.

I'm still dealing with Dell to get this fixed.

In the mean time here is what works for me:

Remove the side panel and lay the case flat like a Xbox. Make sure air can get to the top (cpu gets air from there), the bottom ( the GPU gets air from there), and with the side panel gone everything else can stay cooler.

I get zero lock-ups with the side panel off, & when I put it back on it BSoD's within 10 minutes.

This computer has a lot of power in a very tight package - I think everything is running on the hairy edge.

I already did what you say and you are right. Inmeditly i put the panel againt it crashes. Now it looks bad, but at least it doesn't crash.

I have a "fix" for you I tried today.

It's hard to describe, so I may take some pictures to show you what I mean.

The problem we are having is the riser card is getting to hot on the back side of the video card header.

The CPU fan has a piece of plastic on top of it that funnels air up off the CPU, through the fan and then out the back of the case. Lets call it the Black Plastic Air Funnel (BPAF)

The BPAF is suppose to seal against the case panel, but it doesn't.  So hot air from the CPU spills into the case and hits the riser card.  This hot air is the problem.

The fix is EZ. We just have to seal the BPAF to the side panel so no air gets through.

Get 4 pieces of scotch tape about 1 inch wide and 4 inches long (just the normal clear tape from an office supply store).

Take 2 pieces and put them on the BPAF.

1st piece on the back side of the BPAF parallel to the riser with 1/2 inch of sticky still exposed.

2nd piece on the front side of the BPAF parallel to the riser and stick it to the 1st piece.

Now you have a "fin" that extends up 1/2 inch at 45°. This will hit the panel and create a seal.

Next is the side panel. Same idea, just put 2 pieces of tape on it so the create a "fin" that extends down and hit the other tape that is on the BPAF.

I did this on mine and ran Heaven benchmark for 1.5 hours & then used the computer for 4 hours - problem seems to be gone.

Let me know if you need pics.  If you have some foam tape you can do the same thing...
