100% - CPU Usage

I just received an 8200 with XP. I noticed that the CPU Usage goes to 100% and stays there while I hold any "X" or close button on an application. After I let go it falls to the usual minimal usage. The fan also slows while this is happening! I have an older Precision 410 - NT4 Box that this does not happen.….. Any ideas?

Yes, thats very strange indeed, mine, which is a 4300 running XP also does the same when I keep the pointer pressed on the "X" button on the top right of the display.

It's called the system stack. The CPU monitor isn't always correct, CPU usage 100% doesn't really eman that. Try running windows media player or some other program in the background, the program won't slow down. However, because I'm guessing its continuously detecting your pressing the button then it'll show CPU util at 100%. I tried it on both my computers, CPU util goes to 100% on both, but I suffer no slowdown with any compiling or music I'm playing(on the dual Xeon both proc's supposedly hit 100%).

Yes it's an odd occurance, but on my Dell 1GHz Computer, win98se reports 100% CPU util if nothing is running, but as soona s I run soemthing, AIM WMP7.1 etc, CPU util instantly goes down to about 5%.

You must be really bored to be checking things like that. Although the fan slowing down may be the system reporting idle(after all you are pressing the X for a period of time) but that seems odd, the rest however doesnt.

I note the same 100% usage and it's a huge problem. It occurs while I'm using IE6 and brings it to a screeching halt. Any ideas?

I've been having the same problem since I got my 4400 (1.6 GHz) a couple of months ago. However, the only time my CPU Usage goes to 100% and stays there (which, in my case, brings the system down to its knees), is when
another user logs on (like my wife or kid) without logging me out and he/she leaves us both logged in overnight. So, when I try to use the computer in the morning, the system is running so slow that I always have to reboot.

I've looked at Scheduled Task or Windows Messaging, but deactivating them didn't solve the problem.

Hi

My CPU usage shows the the same thing....
BUT who would want to hold down the close button??
All you have to do is touch the thing.
Been playing on a computer for 5 years and I never needed to do that.

Goto Start; Goto Run; type Msconfig and goto services and uncheck CPUIdle. Click apply and restart. This will stop the 100% thing and the system runs great.

I was forwarded your message, but msconfig\services doesn't have a CPUIdle in it. Any other ideas?

You're right. MSconfig's Services doesn't have a CPUidle (I am using XP Home Edition). Then, I tried to find a file named CPUidle or similar. All I found was CPU.inf. I couldn't see anywhere in it to turn off the CPU when another user was idle. However, I think we are getting close.

I had emailed the person direct yesterday who replied. Hit CTRL/ALT/DEL and goto task manager goto processes, look for the program which is causing 100% usage, when you find it, kill it, then look for that same item in msconfig and kill it there to, reboot. Make sure its not its not System Idle Process, that should be at 100 or 99% depending on what you are running.

I think I've found it, but need to test overnight. Based on your suggestion, I found CFD.exe (a BroadJump app - maybe I got it when I signed up with Southwest Bell for my DSL service) was the pgroam that would eat up my memory, pushing the CPU to 100%. I've turned it off in Startup under MSconfig. Thanks for the idea!

I'm having the same cpu 100% usage problem, (except mine doesn't occur when holding the x button, just randomly) which I swear I posted a message about before.

I have a dimension 4550 running XP.  I looked under processes and found the only one eating up (85% or so) cpu usage was "system", which I find a little disturbing to shut down.  Nevertheless, I did try this and it did not shut down, anyway.

At times the problem doesn't seem to affect the performance much, but at other times it does.  Have to restart to get things going again.  Please help.

Also, where did my original message go???
