CPU Temperature Sensor
Computer: Dell Dimension 5150
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.0GHz
I've recently been learning a bit more about computer hardware when I found a few sites that mentioned something about cpu temperature; I got curious and tried to find out what temperature my cpu was running at; I downloaded a program called "SpeedFan", but it cannot find any information about the temperature of my cpu, although, it does tell me what temperature my hdd is.
Do all computers come with a cpu temperature sensor? And if not, how can I check the temperature?

I tried SIW, PC Wizard, Core Temp, Real Temp, Hmonitor, (and SpeedFan); none work. Any ideas or should I call it quits?

Hey Alexandra_P,
Regarding your statement on PC Wizard only taking snapshots, is that true for all platforms? I have been using it (PC Wizard 2008) for several months now, when I first used it, I only got static temps, then while I was looking at temps from the opening of the program (temps were static) then I hit the wrong icon in the upper corner and minimized it instead of closing it, the program then sent a dynamic temp display in bright lime green to the right side of my display. It lists the following info in real time monitoring: CPU in MHz, CPU Temp, Core #1 - Core #4, CPU Voltage, Core #1 - Core #4 Load (%), GFX #1 Temp, GFX # 2 Temp. It has been doing this for months now, every time I load.
I have played around with this, but do not really know what I am doing, but I find this to be a great little program that I have recommended based upon what it is doing on my rig. Does it not do this on all rigs?
Appreicate the information you might have, Best

Most modern PC's have some kind of temperature sensor to protect from overheating; the problem is whether it generates readable data and then finding a particular program (if there is one) that can actually access it and report it.
If Speedfan doesn't work, a couple others might:
SIW and PC Wizard give temperature "snapshots", though not real-time monitoring like Speedfan does. But either are handy to have for a lot of other system information.
Hmonitor may work, but it's shareware - have to buy it after 2 weeks of use:

Darrell - I just tried PC Wizard again, and you're right, it does put a display pop-up if you minimize when it's monitoring the sensors (XPS 410 running XP). Turns out it's under Tools - Options - Monitor whether you want that to show up or not. Since Speedfan does report temps on mine I've been using that instead and really didn't get into PC Wizard in as much detail.
I hate that - the more I learn the less I know :emotion-4: .

Alexandra - Thanks for testing this out on your unit. I was afraid I had recommended a program here in the forums that did not do what I thought it did. And boy are you ever correct, the more I learn the less I know. Thanks again,
Darrell
