Manually Changing IRQ Settings

I'm in a catch-22 situation and need help. I purchased a firewire-based video editing system (Studio DV from Pinnacle Systems). While trying to edit a video this weekend it caused several GPF's on my new Dimension XPSB667r w/128meg RD Ram.

I called Pinnacle's tech support. They said that their firewire card should be installed on IRQ 9,10 or 11 for 16 bit datastream. It installed on IRQ3. I tried removing the card and reinstalling it in a different slot, but it still goes to IRQ 3. Pinnacle said that it was against their policy to help me manually reconfigure the IRQ settings because they would not know the nuances of my system; they referred me to Dell. Dell Tech support said they were not allowed to help me manually configure my IRQ for hardware/software they did not sell.

I realize that playing with IRQs can be sensitive stuff, so I don't want to do this in a slipshod manner. But I know very little about IRQs and addresses, etc. Can anybody help me figure out in plain language how to safely reconfigure this program for IRQ 9 without conflicting with anything else? (I noted that IRQs 9,10, 11 each have multiple items already assigned, including my sound card & modem.)

I also tried to go manually over-ride the automatic settings in the System>Device Manager, but when I unchecked the automatic setting box & clicked on the manual setting box I get a message saying I can't change this setting. In fact, I got that message for each device I tested it on.

Many thanks for your time and assistance.

I'm not much of an IRQ expert, but if you reserve IRQ3 in the BIOS, it should force Windows to assign a different IRQ for your card.

Doug,

I'm no expert either, but if your system is anything like mine, you may have a hard time changing the IRQs around. Here's how mine are configured:

0 System timer
1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard
2 Programmable interrupt controller
3 (free)
4 Communications Port (COM1)
5 TBS Montego II Sound Blaster Pro Emulation
6 Standard Floppy Disk Controller
7 Printer Port (LPT1)
8 System CMOS/real time clock
9 U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Win
9 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
9 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
10 TBS Montego II PCI Audio
10 TBS Montego II Multifunction PCI Platform
10 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
11 Diamond Viper V770D
11 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
12 TrackMan7 (PS/2)
13 Numeric data processor
14 Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
14 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
15 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller

Maybe if you post your configuration, some IRQ genius out there can help you reassign the higher numbered IRQ you need to IRQ 3 and free it up.

To post your IRQs, copy and paste the information from here...
Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Information

Click on the + next to Hardware Resources and select IRQs. Good luck. (Personally, if I bought a device and the company wouldn't help me install it, I'd send it back.)

Thank you both Ron & Eric. I removed my modem and the firewire card, then (as I read for the modem) I removed the modem information from device manager & shut down. I reinstalled the firewire (video editing) card and booted. It installed the appropriate drivers and to my surprise picked IRQ 11 - what I was hunting for. Then I shut down and reinstalled the modem in its original pci slot (which previously kept picking IRQ 9). I booted, windows installed the drivers, the modem went to IRQ 3!

I can not find any evidence of conflicting memory or IRQ, and the modem works fine. I have not yet reinstalled the software for the video editing suite associated with the firewire card.

However, now I've had two GPF's in 30 minutes that do not seem related to one another. I've not run that many faults in the past. I have run diagnostics from Norton System Works and not found any major problems, and I've defragged the hard drives. I've also run antivirus. (I routinely run these programs so my system is usually in pretty good shape.) I'm a little worried that I may now have some sort of Windows problem, and I don't want to have to reinstall the OS.

At any rate, thank you both for your time and help. Just keeping my fingers crossed that I don't have a new problem.
