Monitor turns off, hdtv says invalid format. Can not seem to fix. Was working (kinda) before.
My friend recently got a new computer from dell. He is using the intel graphics acceleartor for his displays. He stated that he could not get the extended display (his hdtv) to work properly, except if he turned on and off the tv. I tried messing around with some settings in the graphics properties and now there is a much bigger problem. Whenever the hdmi input is selected on the tv that should accept the signal from the computer, the monitor turns off and says entering power save mode, and the tv says invalid format. The thing that I did that made this happen was pressing ctrl alt + F4. We have tried disconnecting the computer monitor cable at starting the computer and up until the point when windows loads you can see the dell logo and startup information on his tv, then it goes blank and says invalid format. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this problem. I know it is probably a simple fix and the pc is outputting the wrong format or doing some odd, but I can not get the display to work. It also will not give me an option for dual displays, only single monitor. My friend is pretty annoyed at me right now so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

What model PC? What Operating System/version?
You can use the System Restore function and restore the PC back to a date PRIOR to doing what you did. That will take it back to the original configuration.
But, we really need to know what model PC, too many Dell's and different configurations.

I spoke to my friend. He is at work so he couldnt really talk but he did get it working again. I think he did a dell reformat back to the orignal factory settings. I still think that he probably did not need to do that. The pc by the way is a dell inspiron 580s. I think he might have been able to press ctrl alt f1. I saw on another forum that that activates the vga monitor. Not to put any blame on my friend, but I warned him after he installed all his programs he should make a system restore disc, so if anything messes up all he would need to do is put the disc in , press a few clicks on the mouse and it would restore his system with all his programs already installed so he wouldnt have to reinstall everything one by one. He said he wouldn't need to do that.
