Optiplex 755 information

I have another item I am looking into. I know all my posts have been for older computers, I am buying them from work - so they will be a few years old and usually be business not gaming machines... This one is a Optiplex 755. I am curious as to a couple things.

The tag line for this model is -

DELL COMPUTER OPTIPLEX 755 2.00GHZ DUAL CORE DTP 80GB 2048MB

which means it is a Dell Optiplex 755, with a 2.00 ghz dual core cpu (probably a E2180 from previous experience), DTP should mean the DT or Desktop model, the 80gb is the hard drive size and the 2048mb is the amount of installed ram it comes with. I realize that I will need to bump up the ram and increase the hard drive size over time, but my more immediate needs are going to be a video card and a new CPU. I am thinking I will end up with an E6850 cpu since it does not seem to support the E7400 I was going to go with (using it on an inspiron 530 desktop instead for my wife). My main concern is...

1. Will this computer use a standard pci-express video card or is it going to need a half height card using an adapter?
2. Will it run high density ram? I did some research and there is a lot of misinformation out there about how only AMD computers can use it or only 9-10% of computers can... I am curious if anyone has tried on this particular model an gotten it to work.
3. I would like to get input from other people that use the Optiplex 755 and get some input on what they recommend upgrading on the system to make it more of a personal computer than a business machine.

Hi greywolf79,

The Optiplex 760 can support full height and any graphic card that works with with a PCI rxpress x16 slot. The 760 uses a card riser which plugs in on the PCI express slot on the motherboard and has an extension PCI express slot on it. Look at the image below:

So this is how you can use a full height card on the Optiplex 760. As far as the processors are concerned, you can go ahead and upgrade it with the E7400, Q8200, Q8300, Q9550, E8400, Q8300, E8300, E6550, Q9400, Q9650, E8600, E7500, E7200 and E7300 . Dell has tested this computer with these processors

Hope this helps.

Hi SpeedStep,

Thank you for sharing the part numbers.

That image was just for illustration purposes. I wasn't able to find a proper image for an x16 slot. Moreover, the upload limit has been reduced to 64kb here on the forum, so this was the best that I could find. The card will be the same. However, yes for X16 the slot will be different. So i did manage to get a picture here of the exact card riser. This will be useful for greywolf69 as well.

SpeedStep and greywolf96 sorry for the picture uploaded earlier, please refer to the picture above for the card riser. I managed to find one. And yes this card riser will work with the Optiplex 760 DT

Hi greywolf79,

I will be more than happy to help you answer your questions.

1. Will this computer use a standard pci-express video card or is it going to need a half height card using an adapter?

Answer: Optiplex 755 comes in two variants. DT (regular sized tower) and MT (slim chassis tower). Both the variants support full-length graphic cards and both the variants have PCI express X16 slots which supports almost all the graphic cards.

2. Will it run high density ram? I did some research and there is a lot of misinformation out there about how only AMD computers can use it or only 9-10% of computers can... I am curious if anyone has tried on this particular model an gotten it to work.

Answer: High-Density RAM according to me means non-ECC 184 pin SDRAM memory. Dell ships non-ECC 184 pin SDRAM memory only. So I guess this should be high density. This computer supports maximum memory speed of 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

3. I would like to get input from other people that use the Optiplex 755 and get some input on what they recommend upgrading on the system to make it more of a personal computer than a business machine.

Answer: It all depends on what you want to upgrade on the computer. Ranging from processors, RAM, hard drive, graphic cards and power supply units. Let me know your criteria, I can answer you accordingly.

Hope this helps.

I would like to get it to the point I can do some gaming but it will mostly be a computer used for things like some very basic programming, some writing of reports and stories (I am a wanna be author) and then office work mostly.

Due to the outrageous requirements for the 1 game I want to play, I will likely be bumping the ram to 6-8 gb range, upgrading the video card, and getting it with a Core 2 Quad CPU as money comes in. I also want to get to a 1 TB hard drive (or use 2 in raid as a backup).

I may also be using it for some home video stuff (making dvd discs out of our camcorder footage).

Sorry guys... Looks like this thread is a moot point. I just found out I am not going to be able to get this one - they sold the last one. However it looks like there is a chance for a few dollars more I might get myself a Optiplex 760. It will need a CPU upgrade faster than the 755 due to it being a celeron 400 series 2.2 ghz cpu instead of a dual core cpu. I will start another thread when I am sure I am getting that one - I need to know if I can use a E2180 in it since it is not listed in the specs I found but it says it will due others in the same series.

760 with celeron?  I would be very wary.  Higher end units have a 305W power supply in a tower sometimes 350 or 375w  and

Copper heatpipe heatsink.

The main issue with Optiplexes and XPS  Vs Precision workstations is that they can only take Single SLOT Wide video cards.

A low Profile Radeon 7750 is the max for Desktop or Mini Tower.  SFF and USFF are not upgrade canditates.

Chart.

I will look into that video card. It is a corporate machine being sold off after it has worked it years in service... It is common for the smaller companies to order with the lower CPU to save money. I have a E2180 in the Inspiron 530 I bought earlier this past month or 2. And I ordered (and received a E7400 CPU already, originally for the Inspiron 530). So I am debating putting the E7400 in the Optiplex or if I should try and get like a E6850/E8X00. I am not sure I will be able to get the new CPU for the next 10 days or so. And I need to buy some thermal paste too.

Optiplex 760 DTP (Desktop) only uses low profile video cards? Do I need the adapter or is the slot to the outside full size but the interior needs shorter cards?

The Right Angle Riser Shown DELL FH687A DOES NOT HAVE AN X16 Video slot so I'm not sure where you are going with that picture.

There are 2 White Conventional PCI slots shown not an X16 video slot.

:emotion-3:

Are you saying that a Dell Optiplex  Riser Asy M5246 G5459 will work in a 760?
