Precision 650 Memory Upgrade Problem
I have a Dell Precision 650 which I would like to upgrade from 2GB to 4 GB. I currently have two 1GB DDR266 ECC modules. The new modules I ordered are 1GB DDR333 ECC. I've tried added the new modules to the two empty slots, but I get the fatal beeps on power on. I also tried removing the original memory and using only the new memory. Again, I get the fatal beeps when I power on.
Is the 1GB DDR333 ECC compatible with the Precision 650? I just upgraded the BIOS to A05, the latest release. The system works fine with the original memory. Any tips are appreciated.

No, you need 2100 ECC.

If a dell person told you that pc3200 will not work in 650 motherboard he does not what he is talking about.
The speed rating on any memory device is the upper limit, but it can operate at any speed slower.
This does not mean DDR memory will work in a non-ddr motherboard or that DDR2 will work in a DDR motherboard.
A stick of PC3200 (400Mhz) ram will run just fine in a dell 650. It will run NO FASTER than a PC2100 ram, so if the PC3200 costs more you are wasting some money.
My own 650 is currently running on two sticks of PC3200. It reports PC2100 speed ram. When I had 603 pin CPUs with 100mhz FSB, the 650 motherboard reported the memory was PC1600.

Is the memory registered? Look carefully at the chips on the memory stick. Is there an odd number of chips or is there a chip in the middle turned sideways? If so you are holding registered ECC ram which is NOT compatible with the 650 motherboard.
95% or ECC ram is registered - this means a control chip sits between the memory chips and the system bus, the result is less strain on the system bus (CPU) at the cost of speed.

My Dell Precision 650 has (4) 500mb Sticks of PC-3200 ECC, non-registered Memory (Crucial) for a total of 2gb.
Runs like a fine Swiss Watch and is ROCK Solid....
