windows/option/cabs HELP
whenever I am trying to install anything.......dont matter what it is ( I always get cant find file and its looking towards windows/option/cabs) I try to point it to look where it is supposed to like d: for instance......but it wont... it says something like file not found....then gets stuck. I looked to view all files in c:/windows/options/cabs and theres only about 9 in there ? Any ideas its driving me nuts.
Dell Dimension bios A02. Windows Me (could it be it's not installing all the files off of the cdrom) Computer worked fine until I had to do a clean install.....(yes I called dell) They already made me install about 6 times... replaced hard drive and modem. Which still dont work right. Would going back to windows 2000 or going up to windows xp help?

Installing "anything" should not require accessing your Windows .cab files, which contain system files. Applications may use versions of system files but they should be included with the installation. The only time you should see the .cab files required would be if you were adding a Windows component (such as you might from Start|Settings|Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup tab).
A clean install would have removed the entries in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs but it also should have removed the entry in the Registry that points to that location. If you would like Windows to look to your CD for those files you may have to edit the Registry. Go to Start|Run, type regedit and click OK. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup and change the value in SourcePath to D:\Win98.

If he is trying to install something like a Network card, it will ask for the cab files. Also AOL will ask for the cab files sometiomes too.
Just FYI

Thanks for the information. Was not aware of that (as I have never installed a Network card). Of course, if someone chooses to install AOL they deserve whatever they get.
Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java.
