Dell Inspiron M5010 problem. (Any) fan stops working after a few seconds.
Hello,
I have Dell Inspiron M5010. When I start the laptop the fan works only for 3-4 seconds and then stops.
The laptop heats up in a minute, the screen becomes black and does not respond anymore. I replaced the fan and the same thing happened with the new fan.
I experimented a bit. I placed the laptop near A/C so the bottom would be cooled down and I would be able to work on it. The laptop worked without a problems for hours.
I ran diagnostics by F12 (while near A/C) and it gave no error. It seems that the motherboard simply turns off the fan once the laptop starts.
When I put the laptop in a "sleep mode" by closing the lid and then open it back, fan starts working for a few seconds and then stops again.
I updated BIOS. While running the "updater" the fan worked. Once the program stopped, the fan stopped.
Any idea why it happens and how to fix it? I appreciate any thoughts.

Hi,
Welcome to Dell community forums.
I am sorry to hear about the issues with the Fan of your computer. Well there could be numerous causes of this issue, like: motherboard, overheating, heat sink fan assembly. As u have already replaced Fan once, I can suggest you few steps which might fix the issue or will help us determine the cause of the issue.
I can suggest you to check the air cooling vents and make sure that the passages are not clogged with lint and other stuff.
Simply raising your laptop off of any flat surface will allow fresh, cool air to come in from the intake on the bottom of the laptop. This will solve many of the heat issues you might be having.
Also, let it be known that you should NEVER have your laptop on any type of soft surface, such as a pillow, blanket, thick carpet, etc.; Doing so will not allow ANY cool air to enter the fan intake, and could cause more system hang ups and permanent component damage. Keep it on a flat, hard surface at all times
After this update the UPDATED BIOS of your computer. (Version: A12)

Remove the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord from your Dell notebook, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds to discharge any residual current inside the laptop. This clears your RAM and is like hardware reset. Replace the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord and turn your Dell notebook on.
Boot in "safe mode". As it starts up press F8, the computer asks you if you'd like to start in safe mode. Highlight "safe mode" and press enter. See if your Dell notebook works normal.
If the problem persists, did you check if it could be your Dell notebook power cord or power source problem? Insufficient power might cause issues that are misleading. Take the battery out and power on your notebook with the charger only. Make sure your notebook power jack and charger plug tip are securely connected. Did you notice the power jack loose?
Please reply in case you have any questions.
Thanks & Regards

Hello,
Thank you for your reply. I tried the method above and unfortunately it did not help. The fan stops working after a few seonds of spinning once the laptop is on. Updating "updated" BIOS also did not work. The updater says that "Can't flash the same BIOS version." Power cord is new and I don't see any problem with it. Vents are totally clean. As I said earlier, it seems that it is the motherboard that sends a signal to the fan to stop working.
Also, the fan does not work independently of OS (it could be DOS , Windows or BIOS Setup). So in "Safe Mode" nothing changed. The fan stopped spinning a way before I had time to push F8 button to load a "Safe Mode".
Well, I put my laptop on A/C again to be able to cool it while running more tests. I used "HWmonitor" to check what happens with power and temperatures. Since A/C was working the temperatures of the processors were quite low and seemed normal. However, the sensor related to "Powers-package" was jumping periodically from 7.42 W to 29.7 W and back. I don't know whether it is relevant or not. This happens both with power adapter and just when on the battery. So, so far I had no luck.

Hi,
“Updating "updated" BIOS also did not work.” Means BIOS is already updated. Well this sounds like a POSSIBLE HARDWARE Failure.
If your system is under warranty, I can help you better if you can provide me some details like Service Tag (7 digit alphanumeric code ending with number 1) which you would find at the bottom of the laptop, your Contact Number, Best Time to Reach and Alternate Phone Number. You can add me as your friend, and send me the above required details through private messaging.
Please reply in case you have any questions.
Thanks & Regards

I still did not fix it. I am convinced that this is the fault of the motherboard. I bought a notepad cooler for my laptop (with two fans in it and adjustable speeds). Also, I unscrewed the bottom base cover (where RAM is). This way airflow from the cooler goes straight onto the motherboard. It works. The temperature of processors stays fixed. However, if 3D application is running (lie Google Earth) I always have to adjust fans' speed to Max.

I am having the same same issue with the same model, replaced fan and the same thing happens with the new fan. Unfortunately it fell out of warranty in may. sounds like a defect. I also tried all the trouble shooting.

Hi,
My name is Andreas and i have the same problem with my fan.
i took out the old fan and i am looking for another new fan to replace.
Any ideas from dell or from you guys for a replacement??
My problem is something that amiroshn said. The only difference with my laptop is that the fan does not work nothing
at all. And the laptop starts only for 4-5 minutes and then gets shutdown(because of high temperature ). The screen does not becomes black and not
response .
If this is not the problem then is a big problem(failure) with Inspiron M5010.
I am looking forward for your answer...
Thank you.
Sincerely ,
Andreas.
Neliks

Hi,
I have Dell inspiron n5010 and facing the same problems. My BIOS also updated to v15 and working good in safe mode. But still its getting shutting down sometimes automatically. I think its due to overheating. My laptop's warranty also expired. What should i do????

perhaps. interestingly enough the fan started working a month ago. what happened I don't know. I just discovered that it now works. Since last year the only thing I did was to update BIOS. Perhaps this may help, but as far s I remember after an update I did not see it working.

go to Dell's page for support of inspiron M5010
www.dell.com/.../inspiron-15-m5010
This will let you download Bios (I think it will be an .exe file). Run the file and follow the instructions. See if that helps.
