Having problems with my graphic card...!

Hi,

I have the Dell new inspiron 15R core-i7 laptop that I purchased 4 months ago. When I open the switchable graphics(in catalyst control center) I dont see the option to switch the graphics as I did when I purchased my laptop. Now I only see the screen in which it says "Creating and arranging desktops". I have Radeon HD 7670M on my laptop. I reinstalled the catalyst control center and it solved the problem for a day or two. Now its back to that screen. Also in my Dell support center I see that a hardware removed notification is there(i.e.  the graphic card). I did reinstall it and it showed hardware added. But this has happened more than once. Also the windows indexing experince rating(gaming graphics) has got down from 6.5 to 5.0 suddenly. And the rating for integrated graphics (i.e. the Intel HD4000)  has also got down. Can someone help me on this. I am really mad at the dell laptop....

Regards,

ABDUL REHMAN

Hi Abdul,

I will recommend you to uninstall both the video drivers and re install them:

  1. Click on "Start" and right click on "Computer".
  2. Click on "Manage" and click on "Device Manager".
  3. Go to "Display adapters" and right click on both Intel and AMD drivers and click on "uninstall".
  4. Once both the drivers are uninstalled, click on 'Start' and click on 'Control Panel'.
  5. Click on 'Programs and features'.
  6. A list of applications will be listed.
  7. Look for the video driver's application for both the video cards.
  8. Right click on it and click on 'uninstall'.
  9. Once done, restart your system windows will install driver for Intel video card automatically.
  10. Once Intel driver is installed, click on the link: http://dell.to/QjjZDA
  11. Enter the Service Tag and select the operating system.
  12. Go to 'Video' and select the Intel video driver.
  13. Click on 'Download File'.
  14. Click on "Save" and save the driver on the desktop.
  15. Right click on the driver that is saved on the desktop and click on "run as administrator".
  16. Install the driver following the on screen instructions.
  17. Restart your system.

Once Intel driver is installed successfully, install the driver for Radeon HD 7670M following the above steps. Restart the system after installing the driver.

In case the issue persists, update the system BIOS:

Note: Please save all your data as your system will restart automatically after the BIOS update. The ac adapter should be connected and the battery should be at least 10% charged. Please disconnect all the external devices connected to the system before updating the BIOS:

  1. Click on the link: http://dell.to/QjjZDA
  2. Enter the Service Tag and select the operating system.
  3. Go to ‘BIOS’ and select the latest BIOS version.
  4. Click on 'Download File'.
  5. Select 'Single-file download' and click on 'Continue'.
  6. Click on "Run" and update the BIOS following the on screen instructions.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any questions.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. As I reached step 11 after that in "video" I could only find the driver for radeon hd 7670M, but when I turned off the service tag filter I could see the 'Intel- Driver' that u mentioned. Should I install it?

Hi,

Windows update recommended an update for my hd4000 and I did it. It improved my indexing experince by 0.1(for gaming graphics). But the catalyst control center is back to the previous problem. It is showing 'creating and arranging desktops' in the place of 'switchable graphics'. What should I do?

Hi Abdul,

Where exactly do you see the message 'creating and arranging desktops' ? Are you experiencing any video issues with your system? When you open Catalyst Control Center, what exactly happens? If possible, please post a screen shot of the issue for my better undertanding about the issue.

Please reply for any further questions.

The hd4000 is considered legacy and therefore the latest AMD drivers will not recognize or work with the card.

AMD Catalyst™ Driver for AMD Radeon™ HD 4000, HD 3000 and HD 2000 Series

AMD has moved to the AMD Radeon™ HD 4000, AMD Radeon HD 3000, and AMD Radeon HD 2000 Series to legacy mode.  The reason for the shift in support policy is largely due to the fact that the AMD Radeon HD 4000, AMD Radeon HD 3000, and AMD Radeon HD 2000 Series are no longer making money and will not be updated to directX 11 status.

Also with regards to Windows 8 support for the AMD Radeon™ HD 2000, 3000, 4000 Series of products; the In-the-box AMD Graphics driver that ships with Windows 8 will only support for the AMD Radeon HD 2000, 3000, and 4000 Series with the WDDM 1.1 driver level features.

What AMD considers "legacy" may not align with everyone's preconceived visions of what "legacy" means. To AMD, legacy products appear to include the Radeon HD 2000, HD 3000 and HD 4000 series graphics cards. Only HD 5000 cards and newer will be spared from the recent abuse.

And before we start Bashing NVIDIA has done similar things with their "legacy" models so that older cards do not work in WIN7/WIN8.

I highly recommend the DirectX June 2010 patch for ALL Versions of windows XP /  Vista  /  7 /  8

'Speed step' I'm sorry but I really didn't get what you were trying to say! But anyway when I rolled back the latest driver update that I installed it fixed the issue. Now I can see the switchable graphics screen and everything that was missing...If you can clarify and simplify it, it could be helpful.
